South Australian State of Origin Team

Talk on the national game

Re: South Australian State of Origin Team

It will be tough to see State of Origin comeback though with the pressures of a full season and i doubt coaches would like their star players getting injuried in games like this. Friday night on before the bounce they talked about having the 4 States play each other in like Rnd 5 and then the 2 winners have a mini final come 13 or so this would be a fantastic concept but highly doubtful but i guess we can only dream it will ever come back.

You expect tough AFL players to play SOO on their week off when those pussies in Rugby League can only play Wednesday and back up Friday, Saturday or Sunday, 3 times a year. Some coaches and Media do make us sound like girls.

The sides that have been suggested for SA on this thread are very ordinary and the Vic side that was suggested would absolutely smash us. What would a WA side look like? I imagine they would be fairly strong.

That's no reason not to have it, in fact that's the point of having it. The best players v best players ..... besides there are a few all-Australians in the SA line-up so I wouldn't write us off too soon. In the 80s half our side wasn't even playing in the VFL and yet we often won. Having a closer look at our side it's pretty strong IMO, line the players up position-for-position and it's pretty close. Rutten did a number on J Brown a few weeks ago for example. O'Loughlin, Burton, Ebert, Pavlich, Tredrea (if fit) is not far off the best forward line as SA has had IMO. Cornes and Rutten not a bad FB/CHB combo. Rutten all-Australian, Cornes a chance for the Brownlow arguably.

I had my tongue in cheek saying we shouldn't have it based on the fact SA would get flogged.

No the SA side posted would get smashed by the Vic side posted. It should still be played though if for no other reason than to prove me wrong

You don't think 3 all-Australians Bassett, Rutten and Cornes can hold Fev, Hall & Brown (Riewoldt not eligible for Vic)?

Is this back-line that scary for Tredrea, O'Loughlin, Pav & Co?
HB H.Shaw D.Milburn L.Hodge
FB D.Fletcher M.Scarlett J.Bowden

It's all hypothetical, we'll have to agree to disagree and check in next year :D

Reckon the 2 midfields might have a bit to do with it as well. The Vic forwards would get pretty good supply.

Either way we might hopefully find out next year as you say.

Beau Waters had a gig in the back pocket didnt he? I dont think that the defence would stretch the SA boys the match would be a shootout but with Judd, Bartel, Mitchell, Dal Santo, Hodge lacing out Fev, Brown and Hall then that would stretch the SA defence. come a shootout i'd put my money on the Vics but wouldn't it great to see them lose something more for them all to complain about.

South Australia’s defence would be able to handle the Vic’s star-studded forward line. Griffin would be the rebounding defender, as is Johncock who starts on the bench. Or swap them around because Johncock is the more proven player.

Then there’s Harris and Rutten, two brilliant full backs who would be able to shut down Brown and Fevola. Then there’s Bassett who would just complement them very nicely. Waters is the courageous, versatile backman who wins his fair share of the ball.

SA would have some quality in the midfield, don’t sell them short. Goodwin, Burgoyne, Edwards, Cooney and co are all damaging players.

The only issue is the forward line. They could probably afford to double team Pavlich, but if Tredrea and Ricciuto find some form/fitness they'll certainly draw quality opposition.

That is not such a stupid idea there from Dutchy. Maybe not now, but I reckon in a couple of years Lindsay Thomas will be as good as Didak.

Haven't seen a Vic side written up yet but i just threw this side together quickly. And im not 100% sure on a fews origins especially the highlighted ones (I think Riewoldts a tazzy????) but still a side similiar to this would defiantly give us SA boys a hiding i think. Anyone who missed or should be their loved to hear your thoughts. I Couldnt pick a decent ruckmen though it is very rough side i tried to pick it on current form more then anything. And what about Allies and the WA side how would they line up?

On that vic side. you said that it was hard to pick a ruckman. I am not exactly sure where Hamish Macintosh is from but if he is victorian he would be under serious consideration for selection if he can continue his current form for the next year. Brad Johnson U said u had forgotten about. He would be a serious contender for the vic captain. He was the all australian captain last year and is having another good year.
