I've only been to Subiaco a couple of times, and that was 15 years ago now.

I'm amazed it's survived as an AFL ground for so long.

Perth definitely needs a new stadium and has the crowds to utilise it.

Was there any consideration to upgrading the WACA or are they still on non speaking terms with their football brothers?

The WACA will never see a competitive game of football on it's surface ever again. It's been reconfigured since the last AFL game there to be a pure cricket ground and it's actually now too small.

I did some work with the WA state team prior to the game against Qld and we used the WACA as a training oval and I did ask if there was still any footy played there. It was pointed out to me to note that there was no centre square marked out and that's because if there was it would actually intersect with the 50 metre arcs.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

An interesting point raised in the radio show I listened to on Friday was that Aussie Rules is one of the few sports where the ovals can be different sizes in each location...

I believe no geo-studies have been conducted on the propsed site as yet, is that right barto? The site may not even be suitable for a stadium to be built upon.

Funny thing last week while I was in Perth, most people, when I asked about the new stadium ( which certainly is of interest to my field of work ) laughed about how long the government will arse around before deciding to go ahead with it....if only they knew.

Correct. They're not even sure if the ground will support the infrastructure as yet. Barnett doesn't think like that though.

I thought the original site was the go and the previous government spent enough money to decide that and I was under the impression the ground work required would be one of those reasons.

Stranger things have happened. Footy Park was a former swamp and it's still standing.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

If Arabs can build mansions and hotels on the ocean, I reckon Aussies can build a footy stadium near a river.

It's truly amazing that the WA state government would consider spending $700m (doubling that figure would be closer to the true cost) to build a football ground.

Had Australia won the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup there might have some justification for investing public money in building a large sporting stadium so Perth could host some games. There would obviously be considerable economic benefits from that.

As it is, the money could be put to better use to benefit all Western Australians, not just West Coast and Fremantle Football Club members, with improved hospitals, schools and social housing.

With a seating capacity of only 60,000 there won't be too much room left over for people who aren't members of the Eagles and Dockers who want to walk up and buy a ticket at the ground to watch a game of footy. The Eagles already have about 10,000 members waiting in the wings to score a seat at the 42,000-seat Subiaco Oval. So when the new stadium comes along, those members will snaffle up most of the extra capacity.

Considering the ground would be for the benefit of the AFL's product, they should be footing the vast majority of the bill.

Yes
The fact that part (or all?) of the proposed site was formerly a waste depot was raised in the radio show I heard - it was said that it may necessitate piles being required for the foundations, which would add to the cost a bit but would not be a "show-stopper".

The Sydney olympic park is built on a former brickworks and abbatoir site. Can't see Perth having any major issues with this.

That site is also a dump as well. I'm led to believe that there are works of art placed around the complex that double up as the methane vents...

It was a dump. I had a uni lecturer that help set up the asset management systems for the site and to disguise the vents they decided to incorporate them into art works. Also the Olympic cauldron is now a water feature somewhere there as well.
