R20 - Brisbane v Adelaide

Postby Gingernuts » Fri Aug 05, 2011 10:58 am

Adelaide team:

B: Doughty, Rutten, Otten
HB: Johncock, Talia, Reilly
C: Smith, van Berlo, Vince
HF: Sloane, Walker, Knights
F: Maric, Gunston, Petrenko
R: Jacobs, Dangerfield, S. Thompson
I/C (from): Armstrong, Cook, Henderson, Riley, McKernan, L. Thompson, Wright

In to 25: Armstrong, Cook, McKernan, L. Thompson
Out of 22: Mackay (knee)

Armstrong in has been confirmed by Bickley. Haven't heard much about his SANFL form, good lately??

Interesting game this one. One we should win, but we've dropped plenty of those this year.

I think Tony has been in reasonable form, i have heard a few people saying he should have been given a go before now.

Hoping Aiden Riley to gets more game time this week and continued improvement from young lads.

Gee, isn't the Crows Nest a quiet place when there's no coach to bag out?

Yea, I'm glad Armstrong gets a crack this week. I remember him doing okay last year. Riley looked alright after being subbed on last week, but it's hard to judge performances against the bottom side (that goes for the whole team to be honest).

There was a lot of blokes who looked good last week. They need to back it up this week though, something they haven't done all season.

Just the 1 change then with Armstrong in for McKay.

Armstrong to be the sub with Reily playing a full game

Reilly at half back has been a great move..... With his great ball use it has helped a lot in the last two weeks

Happy with the win, but need to keep perspective of where this side is at. Where it can get to? who knows, but i think we are on the right track (squad wise).

1st Qtr was fantastic, skills were up around 80% efficiency by foot.
2nd Qtr for some unknown reason (young side, increased pressure) our effiency dropped to 65%
3rd Qtr we had more footy more inside 50's yet they increased the score due to our poor disposal and entry into the 50
4th Qtr i thought they would just keep answering our goals but then we wrestled momentum and got over the line.

I am happy to say that Gunston has proved me wrong. I thought he wasnt up to it, but has sticky fingers and looks like he believes he is an AFL footballer now. Could have had 6 sausage rolls! Taylor while doesnt look fit, has the X factor we need. When Tippet is back Walker at CHF and Tipp at FF.

Armstrong had a reasonable game and Aiden Reilly has shades of Dangerfield about him the way he hunts the footy and stands up in packs.

Also, I think yesterday showed why NC played Dangerfield in the FWD line more. He goes missing for large chunks of the game when on the ball. Yes can be damaging but he is a burst/impact player rather than a 4 qtr specialist IMO

All in all Gutsy win and plenty of Good signs

I'd either move Tippett out to CHF or play him in the ruck.
I think we would get more out of him where he can move around more and is harder to double up on.
Also, it would discourage the midfield from trying to kick every ball to him whether he is well covered or not at FF.

Walker also has a fair leg on him, couple of set shots from 55m or further and cleared the goal line nicely.

Liked seeing Dangerfield around the middle a bit more, would almost like to see him across half back as well.

Van Berlo and Scott Thompson were solid around the middle.

Three things that worked:

1) More attacking game style, second week in a row we've kicked over 100 points without Kurt Tippett.

2) Mid-tier players standing up, the likes of Petrenko, Armstrong, Gunston, Talia all standing up.

3) Aidan Riley looks like another cracker. Aggressive attack on the footy and the contest. Like him.

Three things that went against us:

1) Holding the ball rule, we got nailed with three or four baffling calls, which went against us.

2) Turnovers in the defensive half of the ground cost us goals.

3) Brent Reilly. Ack. Trade bait surely.

One final thing, the press wasn't working well early but come the last term, we seemed to have more energy and the press began to have its desired effect.
Reminder, Brissy and Port are both terrible teams, will have to improve to beat someone with more class but at least the potential to do so has re-emerged.
Right in front of me. RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!

I agree Psyber. Walker has looked very comfortable at FF the last couple of weeks. I think Tippett's workrate would be better used up the ground. I would be trialling him at CHF for the rest of the year if/when he comes back into the side.

Irrespective of where Brisbane are on the ladder, beating them at the Gabba by any side not near the top of the ladder is a pretty good effort. I think the AFC deserve some credit not only for winning it but for getting back into the game to win it. Good signs from the Crows!
