Talk on the national game

Nathan van Berlo

Postby Baron Greenback » Wed Jun 29, 2011 2:27 pm

Is it just me, or is he really struggling at the moment?
Has made quite a few blunders in the past few rounds.
Might be worth dropping back to SANFL if Craigy has the balls.
Richard Douglas is another.
Good to see Petrenko have a real crack on the weekend, because he's another I haven't rated in the past.

A tough one, because I reckon sometimes his 'blues' come when he's trying to back himself and create something (ie holding the ball trying to run it out of defence).

Petrenko could be labelled similar. Many people see him getting done holding the ball or turning it over because he's at full tilt trying to break a chase, and call him a dud. I see a young fella trying to break the lines and create something while his team mates navel gaze.

Back to VB - there's been a lot of critism of him as captain, but I'm optimistic he'll still rise to the occasion though. Half a season in the top job does not maketh the captain, he will develop as the side does. I don't think anyone would want his job at the moment anyway.

Would he be in the side if he wasn't captain?

Worse captain in the AFL, maybe even in the history of the AFL.

Would struggle to get a game at any of the current top 8 sides and definatly wouldnt get a game in any of the top 4.

I'm sorry but Maxwell is hardly a gun and he is captain of one of the top sides over the last few years. IMO he would not be in the top 15 players at Collingwood.

Don't hold back whufc! The poor bastard, 6 months in the job and he's the worst captain in history.

Captaincy is not just about what happens on the field. The players must've voted for him for a reason.

Sack the coach. Drop the captain. Drop this guy drop that guy. If you gave everyone who wasn't performing at the Crows the arse they'd have to forfeit the season. If you haven't got anyone better then you might as well work with what you have and see who wants to make a stand and make the decision(s) at the end of the year with a view to moving forward.

Wouldn't mind seeing a few number 19's dropped TBH, there's a fair few of them underperforming at the moment.

Agreed. Maxwell's not that great, but he's probably doing enough to hold his spot in the top side.
Van Berlo probably isn't in a side that has won 3 games.

He is a terrible player, let alone captain. Surely Thompson would have been a better option. Sums the Crows up really. They have duds in their senior positions.

Maxwell may not be the best footballer in the side, but always puts in 100% and rarely gets beaten in a 50/50 - as opposed to VB who consistently gets beaten in 50/50 and goes missing for large periods and doesn't exactly lead from the front.

I shudder, but compare Maxwell with Tom Harley.

Tommy was a super player in an amazing team/backline rate him a lot higher then i do maxwell. but in saying that maxwell does his job and is certainly 100% at the footy.
if teams made him man up they might exploit him!?

on VB he purely just isnt that good! and gets knocked off the ball very easily. look at all elite midfeilders they have big strong bottom half's but can still run all day. VB can run all day but is like a toothpick compeared to the elite guys.
i have heard that his apointment has frayed the friendship between him and Vince (they lived together) so 2 downsides shit captain and one of their better players has gone missing
