Former Bears AFL star suffers stroke

AFL legend Roger Merrett is in a Gold Coast hospital after suffering a massive stroke.

The 50-year-old is surrounded by family who are praying he will come through the ordeal which happened last Tuesday night.

Hope all goes well for him, he was also a very good player (2 premierships IIRC) for Essendon before he left to be a part of the original Brisbane Bears team

Gave me the impression he is a good bloke on and off the field.

When Brisbane Bears were formed I thought Roger Merrett and Mark Williams would be favourites for the Captaincy, so was a little surprised when it went to Mark Mickan.
Mickan did a great job though.

Yeah, terrible news about Roger Merrett. Lets hope he comes through the ordeal unscathed. :(

I think you'll find that Roger only joined the Bears in 1988, a year after their inaugural season in the then VFL Anyhow, hope he recovers well, 50 is too young to be struck down with any disability.

Reports are that he is talking a little bit and was paralysed down the right hand side however is regaining some movement. Good signs but sure isnt out of the woods just yet. Thoughts are with him
