Choco signs on for 2 more years.

From PAFC.com------

"The Port Adelaide Football Club today announced that it has re-signed senior coach Mark Williams to a new contract which will see him at the helm of the club until at least the end of the 2009 season.

Port Adelaide president Greg Boulton said that the club was delighted to have extended Mark’s contract and secured his services for a further two years.

“Mark Williams has proven he is one of the most talented, driven and innovative coaches in the AFL and we are thrilled to sign him for a further two years,” Boulton said.

“We have absolute confidence in Mark as coach for this football club. His work ethic is second to none, as is his commitment.

“It is an exciting time at our club with a talented young playing group. Mark has a proven track record in developing young players and in developing a premiership team.

“Even though Mark still had one year to run on his contract, we were very keen to secure him long-term and had no hesitation in extending his contract.

“We are very excited about the future with Mark and his team at the helm.”

Williams said he appreciated the faith the Board had shown in him.

“I am thrilled to get the opportunity to continue coaching at Port Adelaide,” Williams said.

“It’s an exciting time given the amount of new players who have joined the club, as well as new coaching staff. There is a real freshness and a regeneration of enthusiasm.

“I look forward to working closely with the new coaches, players and football staff to achieve what all Port Adelaide fans are about – playing in finals, winning finals and ultimately winning another premiership.

“I thank John, Greg and the Board for showing so much confidence in me. Given the fact that I’m still in contract it is great endorsement of what we’re doing and the direction we’re heading.

“Getting a contract extension is very much due to the solid support around me, both from my family and my coaching and support staff. So I am very thankful for their support."

The new contract will take Williams through to 11 seasons as senior coach. Williams joined the Power in its inaugural AFL year as assistant coach to John Cahill and took over the reigns at the end of the 1998 season.

The club has competed in finals six of the eight years Williams has been at the helm, including five consecutive years from 2001 – 2005.

Williams has a 60 percent win-loss ratio as senior coach, which includes an AFL premiership, three minor premierships and two pre-season premierships."

For all those Crows fans who love Neil Craig,he can baffle us with the preverbial, but until his name has such numbers and success beside it,he will just be another....[/i]

Booney, they are good numbers and as Glenelg supporter I was sorry he he got the arse at the BAy, at least he was trying to get us to play accountable footy....

Choco is a good bloke too, confident and determined but a good bloke nonetheless IMO.

How do you think some of those Port "supporters" on Bigfooty are taking this news after there diatribes agaisnt him last year when Port weren't quite travelling too well??

However despite the numbers I reserve the right to give him, you lot and your club sh!t because you all are at the end of the day you are all wharfy scum!!
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Firstly,Seasons greetings to you and your family Tassie.

Secondly,as REB has stated in another thread, the average age and IQ of the Big Footy member is about 18 or 19,and the opinions held and posted on there are not often the views of the majority. The site has,IMO got a bus load of clowns as the ring leaders for each club and the rest just follow suit.I did spend some time on there a year or so ago,but have since moved away.

On the Mark Williams issue, those who gave him a poor report card last year obviously neglected the fact our list had been severely impacted by retirement, loss of key playes and injuries.Retirements are by and by,it will always be the case, people get old, lose the passion and retire. The injuries to the likes of P.Burgoyne,(IMO underrated as how important he is to us),Tredrea,Chad Cornes for two crucial games mid-season really hurt, the decline in Dom Cassisi's performances(who in the two previous years had been solid),Dew's poor form all played a part.

The criticism of Williams as far as the delisting of Montgomery and Pickett go can be argued at some length, now,IMO he got Pickett wrong and Montgomery right,as Brad Symes is a half-back in the waiting and will when fit (another to miss games through the year) be a key member of our future side.Pickett is a game breaker,a match winner,an intimidator and a huge loss for us,the way I see it any way.I cant turn back time so he is gone for good now.

anyone who is critical of Williams and thinks we should dispose of him,I ask,who do we get to replace him?

I was one of those who was criticising Choco, but have since shifted my way of thinking and realise he is the man to led us to another premiership. People say he can't develope young players, well, look at Danyle Pearce, Shaun Burgoyne, Matt Thomas, Kane Cornes, Chad Cornes, etc etc. He developed those players. And having spoken to Choco a few times, he is a very nice guy, and he is extremely passionate about this club, and taking it to it's next premiership. Everything the club does now, is building for the next premiership. It could come in 07, it may not come til 09, but we'll get our next premiership very soon. We have one of the best lists in the competition, and when all 22 players on the field are playing at their best, we are probably still the best team in the AFL. Obviously staying injury free will be a major factor when it comes to winning games.

Bit harsh about BF. The team boards are generally very good. Its when you venture onto the main boards that the intelligence level drops considerably.

I was one that was quite critical of the direction the club was heading last year and early this year as well. I had big issues with player selection, gameplan and some comments he made at a couple of after match functions.

He and the club have done the right thing in the second half of this season and I am quite content that he has signed on for another couple of years.

As for who would we replace him with....every AFL coach at some point is/was inexperienced.

When you say last year do you mean 2005 or 2006?

Look forward to seeing Chocko silencing his critics.

Especially the nuff-nuff on BF who atttributes the 2004 premiership to Jack Cahill!
