"The Port Adelaide Football Club today announced that it has re-signed senior coach Mark Williams to a new contract which will see him at the helm of the club until at least the end of the 2009 season.
Port Adelaide president Greg Boulton said that the club was delighted to have extended Mark’s contract and secured his services for a further two years.
“Mark Williams has proven he is one of the most talented, driven and innovative coaches in the AFL and we are thrilled to sign him for a further two years,†Boulton said.
“We have absolute confidence in Mark as coach for this football club. His work ethic is second to none, as is his commitment.
“It is an exciting time at our club with a talented young playing group. Mark has a proven track record in developing young players and in developing a premiership team.
“Even though Mark still had one year to run on his contract, we were very keen to secure him long-term and had no hesitation in extending his contract.
“We are very excited about the future with Mark and his team at the helm.â€
Williams said he appreciated the faith the Board had shown in him.
“I am thrilled to get the opportunity to continue coaching at Port Adelaide,†Williams said.
“It’s an exciting time given the amount of new players who have joined the club, as well as new coaching staff. There is a real freshness and a regeneration of enthusiasm.
“I look forward to working closely with the new coaches, players and football staff to achieve what all Port Adelaide fans are about – playing in finals, winning finals and ultimately winning another premiership.
“I thank John, Greg and the Board for showing so much confidence in me. Given the fact that I’m still in contract it is great endorsement of what we’re doing and the direction we’re heading.
“Getting a contract extension is very much due to the solid support around me, both from my family and my coaching and support staff. So I am very thankful for their support."
The new contract will take Williams through to 11 seasons as senior coach. Williams joined the Power in its inaugural AFL year as assistant coach to John Cahill and took over the reigns at the end of the 1998 season.
The club has competed in finals six of the eight years Williams has been at the helm, including five consecutive years from 2001 – 2005.
Williams has a 60 percent win-loss ratio as senior coach, which includes an AFL premiership, three minor premierships and two pre-season premierships."
