Cartoons...are they the same as they used to be?

Postby Footy Chick » Fri Feb 22, 2013 4:17 pm

Following on from the talk in the "I need to know thread" I don't think I'd be alone in saying that cartoons are just not the same as they used to be.

Not that I've ever had Foxtel - but when watching at mate's places, I loved Cow and Chicken. I also like Pokemon and Finneas and Ferb - but apart from the aforementioned, I don't really like any of todays cartoons.

Give me Speed Racer and Hong Kong Phooey anyday!

Whaddya reckon?

*edit* have started thread here but moved to Entertainment.

Samurai Pizza Cats was a favourite of mine when I was little. 97-98ish. Same as Biker Mice From Mars and Beast Wars.

The action cartoons have gone downhill but i think the comedy ones are getting a bit more "adult" humor, which is a good thing.

I think maybe previous eras were more conducive to classic cartoons. Possibly the 30's to 50's had the right balance of naivety and skepticism plus the introduction of labour saving devices to the common home inspired far out images of the future, past and present. Change has happened so quickly for a while now, I think the satire has grown too extreme to keep up with that change. Audiences are also now more wily than before, perhaps the old format of cat vs dog isn't enough as a cartoon format anymore?

Awsome thread FC!

My brother, sister and I watched ABC kids on week nights during primary school religiously back in the day.

My favourite cartoons were Albert the Fifth Musketeer and Catdog, also loved Angry Beavers, Rockos Modern Life, Hey Arnold, Wild thornberrys, Real Monsters and Rocket Power. There's probably a heap more too but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

To answer your question, no they are not the same as they used to be, IMO they have gone downhill as creators, producers, etc. have run out of decent ideas.

Cool McCool.

Saturday morning toons in the late 70's early 80's were the best.

Used to sit in radio rentals parabanks when mum and dad had a shop across the mall.

Loved Hanna-Barbera cartoons.

Hated Speed Racer with a passion.

Watched every episode before school hoping he'd crash and go up in flames!

Never did.

Damn.

MP posted a photo of Batfink, that was an awsome cartoon. His sidekick, the karate chop dude was hilarious.

His name was Karate.

Writers must've agonized over that one...

See, this must be a boy thing, but I was never a space ghost fan- except when he was in the other cartoon with the rock guy and Schmoo (the white globular thing, was that its name? )

Rocky and Bullwinkle are also other favourites of mine.

Was also partial to Duck Tales and The Gummy Bears (can still recite the song to this day  )
