He's the Doctor Who writer, yeh? I read a short story of his that was in a Best of Science Fiction collection of short stories. I couldn't figure out where the science fiction part of it was though. It was a story about a detective in the early 1900's or so who's investigating a murder.

Just finished reading: "Lisey's Story" by Stephen King.
Currently on "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson.
I actually finsihed the story of I Am Legend, the final half of the book is a collection of short stories by Matheson.
I was happy to find that the book version of I Am Legend is as different as "The Omega Man" is from the Will Smith version. I am now familiar with 3 versions of a very similar theme.
Also happy to find Matheson is responsible for that old classic "Prey" which scared the living carp out of me when I saw it in movie form as a kid. Little insane Voodoo doll running around with knives and cutlery.

This is really sad Theri but I can't recall, that was so many books ago now.

However, my recollections are that it was mostly about the people in his life and how everything linked together in that fashion (in particular the lady whose house he was boarding at at the time).

I didn't find out anything startlingly new about LHO, although this book did provide a larger insight into his life in Russia than other books I have read.

Another entertaining Hollywood read about insecure egomaniacs blowing millions of dollars.

Not as tawdry but right up there with Charles Fleming''s High Concept: Don Simpson and the Culture of Hollywood excess.

Though Peter Biskind's Easy Riders, Raging Bulls is still the benchmark...

Enjoyed that Hazbeen.

Was a good read.
I thought better than a similar book The Dirt.

I've no idea if he wrote for Dr. Who. I'm only reading this book 'coz a work colleague passed it to me when he finished it. I thought he was more "fantasy" than "sci fi" though; I think he collaborated on a book with Terry Pratchett. Certainly a number of the short stories in "Smoke and Mirrors" have fantastic elements: Trolls, the Devil, magic, werewolves, etc. I've not come across a detective story yet, will let you know if I do.

After failing to remember the title I got annoyed and tried searching for my book, but I think I have passed it on. But after a google search I discovered that the title of the short story is "A Study In Emerald" and it appears in "2003: The Best of Science Fiction". It was a very well written story, if I was to stumble over anything else by him I'd read it.
I think I was mistaken about the Doctor Who part. But it looks as though he has done a heap of other work and has a bag of awards for it.

Writing is a little jarring at times (long sentences with the odd bit of punctuation marooned unnecessarily), but pretty entertaining throughout. No really startling new Brady-related revelations not covered by the more superior "Growing Up Brady" by Barry Williams (Greg), although her story of Eve Plumb (Jan) wandering around sans clothes in the dressing room and, um, copiously breaking wind throughout for long periods of time created interesting images.

Most of the tales of her life and mistakes made had no punches pulled. Certainly an eye opener in that respect to read just how much she had done in her life and how well she seems to have got herself together.

Brady fans, though, would probably be better reading "Growing Up Brady" for dirt - some of Williams' stories were very, very funny and entertaining (the McCormick book rehashed many of the same stories from a different perspective). His recounting of the day he shot a Brady episode while under the influence of, um, greenery is gold at its best.
