10, 9 or 8 teams

This great competition has been operating with nine teams for the last 15 years, Given that for 27 years before that it was a 10 team comp and before that for 44 years an eight tem competition is it time to get rid of the bye by adding or deleting a team or do we stay with the nine team comp.

If we add a team where does it come from? Where is the population growth of Adelaide going to support a team long term - my guess is given the growth around Gawler, Mawson Lakes, Munno Para and the tail end of the Golden Grove development if team is going to be based anywhere the North East area of the city is probably best.

Or, do you add an Adelaide reserves team to the comp and all AFL listed players play for Port or this new Adelaide SANFL team. Both these clubs are supplemented by State U/18 squd memebrs to make up the the numbers when injuries occur

Or, Re-create West Torrens/Port Natives

Or do you get rid of a team or Merge two teams - West and Glenelg and go for the Yongu crowd?

Or do you get rid of a club all-together - South because they have 15 years to get it sorted at Noarlunga and can't, Norwood because they have a economy worse than Equitorial Guinea, Glenelg because of your latent jealousy towards us from the days when Wa Wa Nee and Uncanny X-Men were on Countdown.

(FFS don't take any of my choices of clubs to merge or go seriously as they are for illustration purposes only!!!)

So for a moment you are Leigh and Rod, in charge of the good ship HMAS SANFL, what do you do, where do we go.....

It has to be 8 teams but how you get there is going to be a real struggle? Emotions, loyalty etc will be big factors!

Id like to see 10 teams with a Crows ressies unit but this will never happen so I voted for the first option.
But as I'd prefer to see 2 of the lower supported clubs merge and most of the clubs with bugerall supporters have pretty good finances I doubt this will happen too.

Perhaps the SANFL should petition to get some extra funds from the AFL's new TV Rights deal and bring back Torrens and Woodville as seperate entities as I can't see another club coming from anywhere in SA and it seems its too pricey to get one from I/S.

Its a dilemma, that's for sure. The bye sucks.

As much as I hate the bye, I would rather see it stay than that option taken. I can't see a Crows, or ever a Cows/Port (AFL) 2nds side being competitive. A lot of the young and/or fringe AFL listed players struggle to make their SANFL clubs now, or some have even struggled to make theur reserves sides. The competition has to be competetive, not have an easy beat side to just make up the numbers.

I thought you got close, The Southern Tigers has a nice ring to it

To make sure the competition stays strong an 8 team comp is the answer. And there is really only one way to do this.......

South and Glenelg merging would be the ideal option IMHO.
South have no supporters and lots of $$$ where Glenelg have a few supporters who would come out of the woodwork when/if the merged team started winning.
I'd only want them playing at Glenelg Oval though.
Unfortunately I can't see this ever happening though, with South's $$$ they don't need to even consider merging as lacklustre as their supporter base is.

It'd probably work well from a social point of view as players from 5 different clubs have told me that they get along with players from every club except for the South and the Eagles who they consider are full of dickheads. Don't shoot the messenger on that one too, I was suprised myself!

10 teams. Bring in a country team say Victor Harbor or somewhere within an 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive from Adelaide.

Murray Bridge, Hills (Mt Barker?) or The Barrosa would be the only areas within that distance from Adelaide that would have the population to support a team, other areas that are further away that could possibly support a team are Mt Gambier or the Riverland.

This is always the problem.
Bring in a Victor team and you stuff South up.
Bring in a Mt Gambier team and you stuf Glenelg up.
Bring in a riverland team and you stuff West up.
Bring in a Pt Pirie team and you stuff North up.
Bring in a hills team and you stuff Norwood and Sturt up.
Bring in a Eyre Peninsula team and you stuff Port up.
Bring in a Barossa team and you stuff Central up.

We don't want another Woodville happening that stuffed up Torrens to a degree.

I honestly can't see how or where it could hapen, I think its a legacy of being the most urbanised state in Australia.

That's so true.

I think we are stuck with 9 teams then, given this situation.

Thats why I left Pirie & Pt Augusta alone

The SANFL should have taken the chance when it had it. When "The Original" Port entered the AFL, why did they let them create the "new" Magpies?
I know they were worried about losing crowds etc., but it would have saved a lot of grief trying to get 2 sides to amalgamate later.

Nine Teams.

I would never favour a merger just to get rid of a bye. Gettin rid of the bye shouldn't even matter in any of the options. No one likes the bye, sure. But it's part of our league, at least for now. Who doesn't like wondering how there's three teams not playing on a week! It's great! :)

As a fan I hate the Bye, but I'm sure most if not all trainers (and other volunteers I would imagine) welcome the week off, as would the players possibly?

The solution is simple. One and only one Port Adelaide - in the AFL. If they want the magpies can play in A1.

Port District pretty much is Port Adelaide in A1.

Simple - Maxie and co. wanted a Port team to remain in the SANFL.

Whether you guys like it or not, the SANFL would lose a hell of a lot without a Port or Norwood.

A hell of a lot.

And have South fans in the year 2130 still complaining they haven't won a premiership because their zone has been eradicated?

Someone mentioned Mt Barker.
Thinking about it a bit that starts to make a bit of sense. It's a growing area within easy reach for most. It would provide the people in the hills with a higher level of competition to watch. There are some very good footballers in the area not getting a chance to play at a higher level.
