HAMISH HARTLETT shocK inclusion

Postby mal » Thu Aug 16, 2007 10:06 pm

17 year old West Adelaide junior made his league debut last week V South Adelaide
A perfect opportunity for Hamish to finish the year off and show his talents

However he is a 'shocK' inclusion for SHOC this week

I dunno if I agree with this, is a SANFL selection this week more beneficial ?

SHOC...Sacred Heart Old Collegians or Sacred Heart College ?

If it's for the College, alot of colleges recall players from underage squads re 17/19's. usually part of the agreement with the SANFL clubs...

I can tell you why SHC went down last week being a proud football school they would not like losing often.

I thought if you were playing league footy you could be exempt from playing school footy.........obviously not

Nah..had a mate who played for Sturt 17's & 19's a few years back now and he said that they used to have them for a couple of games at the start, they'd then go to the private school footy, and return for the final couple of games..

Ben Hart playing for Rostrevor instead of North Adealide in 1990
Brad Ottens playimng for Immanual College instead of Glenelg in 1997...

There are plenty of precedents
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

From what I can gather SHC agreed to let Hamish play 3 games in a row for the Bloods which turned out to be 17s, 19s and the league game agains SAFC.

WAFC have some decent inclusions this week, Willits, Gray, Piasente.

Might have been some "gamesmanship" (for want of a better word) by WAFC in letting him go back unopposed, so hopefully SHC will be less inclined to kick up a fuss when we really need to pick him at a later date.

Thankfully he is too young to get drafted so hopefully (like Cooney) he can play 12-15 league games for us next year before Kapoofing off to the AFL.

Typical silver-spoon arrogance I say.

Plus potentially a restriction of trade to some extent? Don't fully know if that could be a legal consideration here, but presumably West would have paid Hartlett for his debut game...

So, for the legal fraternity out there, is he being denied the chance to earn income by being forced to play school footy?

Or are SHC (and the like) playing their players?

Hmmm....

Wasn't Sam Fairclough from St. Mick's? Might still be as I think he was Year 11 last year? He's always been available to play league for the Eagles over college football.

each school has a different policy St Mick's obviously allow players playing league football to chose which they would prefer. I know for Cricket SHC release players for SACA B-grade & higher

I think the restraint of trade argument is a bit of a stretch fatal. His trade is still currently 'student', not 'footballer'. Football is only a part time consideration andhe would have to give that up for school commitments if the school wants him to.

Common sense says that league footy trumps school footy, but Hearts don't often see common sense when it comes to their footy program.

Agree it is a stretch, but exactly how much is he earning from being a student?

I just don't get how these college whacks think they have the right for first call on kids for their sports teams, when the SANFL would clearly be the best competition for them to play in.

Like I said, typical silverspoon arrogance.

btw - my brother went to Princes and my sister was at Annesley, so this is not simply a "jealousy" call on my behalf. Mum & Dad offered me the chance to got to PAC as well, but I politely declined and went to a state school instead. Has done me no harm. It might have offered me the chance to play higher level cricket, but as Dutchy can attest to that would have been unlikely, given my complete lack of talent...

Agreed, it is arrogance to force him to miss out on league footy, but the parents sign their kids up to these rules, I guess they cannot whinge when the rules are enforced.

Thankfully, the college I went to did not enforce participation - the results of our first 18 showed this as well. I recall a day in year 10 when I played first 18 (on a week when Centrals had the bye - it worked in reverse for me!) to fill in and we got smashed by St Pauls 53.23 to 0.1 (and I kicked that point in the first 30 seconds of the game).

If it's spelt out to all and sundry when they commit to a particular school, I don't see it as arrogance ... However, I do agree it's common sense to let a student play at their highest possible level ... Schools are supposed to be for individual development, so Im not sure why some don't support this theory beyond their own fences.

It differs from school to school, I think Trinity out at Gawler allow their students to play at Centrals if they're picked in the League or Reserves...
