Rules & 'Sanitation'

Postby LPH » Wed Aug 15, 2007 10:53 am

Having read with interest, a number of threads regarding reports...

1. The rules HAVE changed because the SANFL is dictated to by the AFL...

Umpires are more often than not out of position because they are INSTRUCTED (by the AFL) to 'run up & down the middle of the ground' & as a result often miss 'the first free kick'

The 'holding the ball rule' is ridiculous (again as dictated to by the AFL) it rewards the bloke 2nd to the contest (made by a bloke in K. Bartlett who never got a hard ball get in his ENTIRE career)

The game IS becoming 'softer' (wait for it ... due to the AFL dictation) by removing the shirt front even in some cases a fair bump... because 'little johnnie's mother' might insist that he play soccer because it's 'non-contact'... Even modified rules games for kids (that we played, where a player could recieve 2 bumps, then 'holding the ball'... doesn't exist now)

This results in a number of issues for supporters & more importantly players...

1. Accept that our game has changed (getting closer to 'glorified basketball' or 'Gaelic Football' very year) & 'soft' reports are a fact of life - what can you do anyway?

2. Modify your approach to the contest if you are a player or a coach instructing your players

3. UNDERSTAND that although we may not agree with what has happend to the game, ACCEPT IT & GET OVER IT

Our game is STILL the best spectator sport in the world, it's just not what we all grew up with & reports for incidents that we think are 'soft' are going to continue.

P.S. I assume that this post won't be locked Wedgie, as it is VERY tame & isn't anti-sturt or north ???

This is the one that confuses me as AFL umpires have one on the boundary side and 2 in the corridor while the SANFL umpires have 3 down the corridor in recent games Ive been watching of both AFL and SANFL. I don't see how the AFL would instruct the SANFL umpires to do something different to them, surely its the SANFL umpiring fraternity and Shane Harris that instruct the SANFL umpires what to do?

PS It was anti Sturt and anti Eagles (nothing to do with North) posts in the one I locked but had nothing to do with clubs and more to do with the mindless childish drivel that has been done to death.

Why accept and get over something we don't agree with? If we did that with everything in life we'd all be very pathetic people living very pathetic lives with probably no sport to watch.

I belive in fighting for what you believe in and not lying over like a pathetic piece of useless dog doo doo.

First of all... if you READ BOTH my string & retort, I thought FOOTY OPINION was allowed  & when others start talking 'housing' that's their issue not mine...

Second... could the 'corridor running' be a result of 'fitness' ??

And another thing... tell me why then that a bloke 10m from an incident can call 'play on' or make no decision, yet another 40m to 50m can blow his whistle & pay a free ???

Fair enough mate, I didn't realise it was a string & retort I thought you were making points.

Good question re fitness but I don't think that's the issue, I think its the way they're instructed by watching them. IMHO all SANFL umpires are pretty fit.
