I noticed some time ago, that some nuffies refer to Dean Howard as "Thug". I think he'll be a great bloke to have around the club, & if his "crime" was thumping a Glenelg player, then I'll make sure that the Queen herself is aware of this, so that his nomination for a Knighthood can be accepted.

even if this topic is tongue and cheek or just a bit of fishing you should remember that hitting a bloke behind the play while he is not watching is a disgraceful act and a scurge of the game. This type of action is what is wrong with the ameture league and many other football competitions. This type of action is unwelome in the sanfl. Disgrace.

But when they play for your club they are "misunderstod/provoked/good bloke once you get to know them/recommended for a knighthood/ (inset any appropriate term)".

No wonder the most common respeonse in the budget player profiles category "pet hates" is fickle supporters....

The rule is simple... You play for North, we love you. You play for anyone else, we hate you! (Exception is any North player who doesn't leave by choice)

No wonder the most common respeonse in the budget player profiles category "pet hates" is fickle supporters....

Quite simple really, footy is an emotiaonal game with fierce loyalties.
The same reason people who get transporting drugs are described by their families as top people who are misunderstood.
I wouldn't describe that as fickle, probably the opposite, I tend to think of the fickle supporter described by players as a pet hate as the supporter who cheers and tells the footy players how great they are after a win but are the first to boo and abuse the same players if they lose.

Personally I can think of two thug acts by North Adelaide players that I would have been ropable if it was the other way around, ironically both against Westies players who have been trying to drag us into fights to put us off our games for the last 20 years!
1st at Richmond Oval when Steven Riley broke Roger Luders jaw
2nd in 1991 GF when Steven Sims (must be something about Steven's) hit Matthew Simpson from behind in the old scoreboard pocket, I was at the top of the councourse near the scoreboard and heard the thud as clear as if it were next to me, it was quite sickening. Having said that if Westies hadn't tried to put Darel Hart off his game by illegally roughing up prior it would have never happened.

I actually saw worse things happen in C Grade Southern League in the 5 years I played than in the 30 years I've been watching SANFL.

The Howard "THUG" comment is tongue-in-cheek, relating to a fight between Howard and Heath Culpitt a couple of years ago. It wasn't behind the play, but caused a debate between some West and Glenelg supporters.

Both players now play for other clubs, so they are both "THUGS" as far as we are concerned

Good post Wedgie, 100% agree, I was taking a philosophical point of view.

I am guilty as charged when it comes to have hypocritical opinions on certain players - just my emotions getting the bettr of me.

I seem to remember a game at Norwood Oval (Norwood v Central)- must have been in the 80s when an all-in fight before the inital bounce. Resulted in Gilbert McAdam going off for stitches before the game started. If thats not thuggery what is?

Didn't see the incident LL and am somewhat shocked given Macca's gentle nature ... Was just replying to Wedgies comments of the worst incidents he'd witnessed, certainly not trying to suggest my club (or anyones for that matter) is better or worse than any other.

D4E, that game was in 1988, both teams warming up at the same end (Centrals there first, so most likely our fault) and I remember McAdam coming off for stitches prior to the first bounce ... Both teams would have had quite a few sore and sorry boys the next day...

I dont think tongue in cheek is appropriate when mentioning Salisbury's playing style,I think elbow in cheek is more apt.
