Eagles New - 17 players gone

PostPosted: Wed Jan 24, 2007 6:05 pm
by Mr Fuller
Today Ron Fuller sent an email around to members with an update on new recruits, pre-season news and those who have left the club. He mentions that 17 players last year who have played league have left the club. Does anyone know exactly who these are? I know of maybe 5-6 i.e. Skipworth, Westbrook, Shattock, Potter, Jacobs, Frewan

Who are the rest????

This is a massive hole and will test our depth. Lets hope all the junior can stand up as they will be called on at some stage

I heard the same at the start of last year, doesn't say much for the rest of the league if they were in trouble last year.

It's gained momentum in the last couple of weeks. Seems odd to screw with a winning formula when you get it.

Give me info then. Or perhaps I'll wait for cd to say what's actually happening.

Dear Online Member,

COACHES COMMENTS

Hello to all Eagle supporters and Happy New Year to all of you. I thought I would take the opportunity to let you know how our pre season and development is going.

Over the post season we have had a lot of players retire, move interstate or decide to play in a lesser competition. As such a total of 17 players have left the club who played league football last year. At first this may seem a lot but we did have 46 players play league football in 2006, which is an extraordinary amount for the Premier team, and a lot of those didn't have a huge impact on our season.

Having said that they were all quality people and it has cut into our depth a bit. The most notable are Brent Frewen, who has retired because of time commitments and the uncertainty about his body coping as well as the three others who played in the Grand Final team, Ryan Potter, Hayden Skipworth and David Westbrook.

Ryan has taken up a placement in the Gippsland of Victoria, Hayden has chosen to play with Bendigo and train with Essendon in the hope of re-entering the AFL, while David is returning to the family farm on the Yorke Peninsula for personal reasons. Brent has been a good servant of the club and we wish him and all the other retirees of the club the best in their endeavours.

It has opened up positions in our team though and we are still excited and confident of our future. One of the exciting things is having over 20 players who are still eligible for underage training with us at the moment. By the way a couple of these boys are from the country and are presently hoping to move into a board environment with a family for 12 months or so until they settle in, so if we have any supporters in the area of the club who would be able to accommodate them it would be greatly appreciated. If you are able, please contact Kym Ireland at the Club.

The rest of our group is coming along nicely including our recruits, Ben Schwarze from The Kangaroos and James Rimmington from Coburg. We also have Joe Pedler's younger brother George training with us as well as Luke Duncan who played a couple of seasons with Port Adelaide. Both boys played in the country last year and are looking to play good senior football in 2007.

Another addition is a young man from Mildura with a very good pedigree. His name is Jonathon Lee and he is an 18 year old ruckmen/ forward who played every game with the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC competition last year. He is also the son of former Richmond Hall of Famer and Club Captain, Mark Lee and we are looking forward to seeing him progress in much the same way Sam Jacobs did last year. Jonathon is also looking for some work, so if there are any sponsors out there with something available please contact Kym at the Club.

So there it is. We are training 5 to 6 times a week at present with Monday and Wednesday nights at Thebarton, so come down and see how we are going.

All the best.

Ron Fuller

First of all, I'm not sure why the whole 17 aren't named.

18 players played 4 games or less last season.

As the e-mail said, only 3 out of the 17 actually played in the premiership team.

The known list of players would be so far:

Potter 13 games
Skipworth 14
Westbrook 22
Shattock 20
Frewen 3
Oakley 6 - the first 6 matches
Jacobs 13
Spencer 3
Angus 0 - 1 match in 2005
Jackman 1
Vandeleur 2
Stacey 1
Price 1
Wigley 1

That's 14, so there's 3 left. Here is the list of those who played 4 games or less:

1 game
Chris Stacey
Daniel Roberts
Denis Redden
Ken McGregor
Matthew Jackman
Robert Fiacchi
Todd Price
Tom Wigley

2 games
Brad Coles
James Vandeleur
Jon Floreani
Nathan Bock
Paul Stewart
Ross Pedersen

3 games
Adam Spencer
Brent Frewen
Steven Hall

4 games
Nick Salter

The other 3 mostly would be coming from here, but it would have been good to know exactly who they are.

It wouldn't have been Hall, Floreani, McGregor or Bock, as they all would have definitely been noteworthy to mention if they retired. Nor would it be Stewart of course.

That leaves:
Roberts
Redden
R.Fiacchi
Coles
Pedersen
Salter

If all of the 3 come from this group, then realistically the losses aren't drastic by any means; as was said, it would give chance for more younger players to step up as well as the new recruits.

I'm happy if the rumours have started again - will be the same start to 2007 as our Premiership year in 2006!

Yes there has been movement - thus a free email directly to our members from the coach.
Remembering is 17 out of league squad for 2006
The email service is now back and we will again once the season starts be sending at least 3 free emails per week to our members. During preseason emails will be semi regular.

Players out of 2006 league squad

Skipworth - interstate
Shattock - interstate
Oakley - interstate
Potter - interstate
Wigley - employment
Jacobs - drafted
Westbrook - family
Frewen - retired
Spencer - country club
Angus - country club
Vandeleur - family
Jackman - country club
Stacey - return to local club
Price - return to local club
and memory has given up!

Anyone is welcome to attend training as invited by the coach - check for yourself - you'll see a very committed squad getting ready to defend the premiership.

Thanks cd. 8)

Yes, it doesn't appear to be too bad when looking at the players out.

Apart from another premiership this season, my wish is to see Hally get to 200 matches. :)

Punky, could the Eagles afford the clearance from Fitzroy?
Im sure Ron would invite you after that effort at Woodville Oval a couple of years back that he witnessed!

It's probably not a bad thing to have a great turnover after a premiership year, as long as the core group of players remain and as spelly mentioned, all of them are still with us. The really important "depth" players who didn't play a lot last year but are league level and add plenty to the squad IMO are Earl, Wigley, R Fiacchi, Salter, Floreani, Hall and with Jacobs gone you could probably add Pederson. I believe Petrenko and maybe Fitzgerald and Hicks can step up as well. It's a pity to lose Angus, Jackman and Spencer and I thought Vandeluer showed potential much the same as Dawe did the year before.

We will miss the talent of Westbrook, Skipworth, Potter and Shattock, but we have hopefully replaced them with recruits and/or players stepping up from last year. One of the real positives I think is the likes of Hier, Stewart, Dabrowski and Bernie Vince who didn't play too much last year, but could be high quality at SANFL level if they have a good run with injuries.

I am really looking forward to the coming season. The current group of players know what it takes. The gorilla has been shown the exit gate and after what they've been through, it will ensure the hunger is there to keep on winning week after week.

Says the Strut supporter! You blokes invented trouble back in 1989 and hold the patent. You might even get royalties if you are correct about any impending doom in the Eagles nest.

I'll be interested to see how Luke Duncan goes.
He's orginally from Barmera (not sure where he was last year).
Likes it easy, but when gets going is a class act.
