Thats my sense too it's going to happen but the AFL have other priorities.

Why should they fund a separate reserves competition when there are three perfectly good leagues below the AFL level.

The Victorian clubs dont want to give up their perceived advantages, especially when they look at Adelaide and Port and say look you blokes are getting 13/23 home games a year

As Jim said elsewhere on this site, there's inequities everywhere you look in the AFL.

If Adelaide, West Coast and Port want to join the VFL in 2025 it will be coming out of their own footy ops budgets. West Coast have got the money, Adelaide somewhat, Port well I'm not privy to their intricate financial liquidity.

Just my personal opinion as someone standing on the outside of the AFL looking in.

Given the VFL comp already has 14 AFL reserves sides, am I correct in saying the only thing needed for a national reserves comp is to add the other 4 reserves teams to that?

I.e., the only thing needed would be additional funds for the increased travel and accommodation requirements due to doubling the number of non-Victorian teams?

No. A full AFL reserves comp means running under the AFL banner and therefore the AFL funding the whole thing. Increased salary cap, list sizes etc as well as scheduling, organising games etc. At the moment the VFL still runs the VFL and sets fixtures, rules, salary caps etc.

IMO there should've been a South/Western team (South/Glenelg/West/Eagles/Sturt) a North/Eastern Team (North/Norwood/Centrals) and then Port.

The SANFL/AFL reserves complaints is as simple as Port being sore losers, they can't handle not winning and are using anything they can to try and gain an advantage to win something.

I’ve been told by multiple sources AFL have assured Port/Crows they will fund the extra costs.

Not sure about West Coast/Freo.

But the AFL pays for all the transport/flight costs for the VFL presently.

Correct.

They do have the question of what happens to the 7 independent clubs currently in the VFL.

I doubt killing them off is the answer

Just regarding AFL reserves will destroy the SANFL due to players rushing off to be top ups.

The VFL has had AFL reserves teams for decades lbh.

This is what happened with vfl transfers this season via the VFL ins and outs.

SANFL lost 6 players to the vfl . But SANFL have gained 23 players that played vfl last season

Plus I know that former Panther Tom Highmore delisted from St Kilda signed with Pt Melbourne in the VFL. And former dog Rhett Montgomery delisted from Essendon signed with Footscray instead of returning to SANFL. There could be more I have missed.

TRANSFERS
SANFL to VFL
Sam Nehme (Norwood - Box Hill)
Harper Montgomery (Port Reserves -GWS VFL)
Owen Mulady (West Adelaide- Port Melbourne)
Riley Collier-Dawkins (Eagles-Williamstown)
Jackson Hately (Crows- Essendon)
Tylor Brown(crows- Box Hill)

Vfl to SANFL
Jake Arundel (box hill- South)
Wilson Barry(Brisbane - Centrals)
Finn Emile-Brennan (Casey- South)
Billie Coetee(essendon/Norwood)
Arlo Draper(Collingwood-South)
Cooper Murley(Collingwood- Norwood)
Alastair Lord(essendon/Norwood)
Will Snelling(Essendon/Sturt)
Austin Harris (Essendon/North Adelaide),
Callum McCarty(Essendon/South)
Toby Murray (Essendon/Adelaide SANFL)
Cody Raak (w/bulldogs/North Adelaide)
Morgan Ferres (G/Coast/Sturt)
Luke Lawrence (GWSNorth Adelaide),
Max Monaghan (GWS/Central District)
Dayne Posthuma (GWS/Central District),
Cam Fleeton (GWS– W/West Torrens)
Nick Stevens (Nth Melb- Glenelg)
Zach Morris (N/Bullants- Norwood)
Jake Gasper (P/Melbourne- Centrals)
Oscar Adams (Sandringham– Glenelg)
Will Gould (Sydney– Glenelg)
Jack Boyd (Werribee- eagles)

I think you'll find the essence was in the "dinkum" and not the "bring 'em".

Just a feeling. ;)

Which was at the Eagles request as they were doing renovations at Woodville Oval.
