Reckon the SANFL made the rule and when the AFL heard about it asked to be kept in the loop about the feedback.

Think it works well and players just have smarten their approach to 'sheparding' the ball out.....

Exactly so now players will get smarter with 'shepherding' it and we will have bigger a grey area than what the deliberate ball was.

This the problem I have with all these rule changes to make it more attractive

At the end of the day to the majority of people the SANFL will never be more attractive than the AFL regardless of what rules we have. We can't compete with the sheer marketing and bright lights of the AFL

Now who are your biggest promoters of the SANFL.

It's the long standing supporters who have been going to games for ten plus years. No they won't be around forever but their the SANFL's biggest promoters who will bring their kids through the SANFL, encourage friends and families to go, talk about the SANFL at work etc etc

Once again the SANFL is alienating them and making them feel like the game has gone past them and they don't relate to the game that's now been played

It's all good and well to try and create attacking free flowing football but how many people are going to give up their AFL support or tv interest in the AFL because the SANFL have a changed a rule of two

The SANFL should be promoting the fact it has generations of supporters with long histories and memories to these clubs

Lol not sure how that's relevant to my post but anyway

The soccer fans are up in arms about the ball being allowed to be kicked backwards from kick off lol

I do love though how the IFAB talk about the minor rule changes as being a once in a generation oppurtunity to change some anomalies. Not a once every year oppurtunity to change major rules

The last touch rule is a disaster. Watched an U18 game yesterday. Firstly saw different interpretations from field umpires. Several times an errant shot on goal or pass went out of bounds in the forward pocket all it served to do was release the pressure on the defending team, instead of a throw in close to goal maintaining the forward pressure on defence it was a free kick out of the danger zone. No reward for the hard work done up the ground to get the ball forward.

At other times around the ground hearing players yell "leave it" "don't touch it" is a terrible look for footy. The ball is oval shape when it lands nobody knows where it will bounce.

why should the attacking team be rewarded for missing 2 sets of white posts? Putting forward pressure on is bullshit because they didn't kick the ******* goal!

You must be the miracle man never missing a target?? Some times it just goes over the top, gets caught in the breeze or what ever does not hit the target. A free kick for that I Bull****..

Why the bad language. Just because you don't agree, no need to be abusive

Sturt coach Marty Mattner going to be on SEN radio in Melbourne this hour to talk about the last touch rule. Clearly interest from across the border on it. Be interesting to see what Marty's views are and if they reflect the coaches of SANFL as a whole.

To me and most people I have spoken too reckon the the last kick not touch rule is a great success.
Saw 2 game last weekend for consideration on this change.
At the parade,a great contest, with very few last kick frees.
The spectical of the game has improved considerably since previous years.
You will see less ball ups and less boring boundary throw ins,
I heard about 30% down on last year.
The games match ball direction has definitely got less defensive boundary strategy.
Also saw a seconds game only counted about 3/4 for the whole game.
Great stuff, more scoring with more exciting foot.
Thank goodness for the SANFL game improvement committee and their work outcome.
Remember coaches probably don't like it,
they love low scores with lots of boundary defensive strategies.
They are not hired to showcase the game to new followers and existing disenfranchised supporters who no longer turn up at games.

On Saturday a player kicked for goal and the ball bounced into the behind post without being touched by anyone.
Correct decision then would be a boundary throw in ?

Yep but even the umpires don't know the rule entirely

Yep, I remember that. Think it might have been Clint Alleway and they had a throw in.
I didn't think anything of it at the time as I was taking in the comments about Prospect being the only ground in the Sanfl that still had red posts. And if Prospect were to host an AFL pre-season game, the red posts would have to go and probably wouldn't be back.
I thought it would be sad that another piece of SANFL's identity would be gone.
