I'd say with three big outs for the eagles (Rowntree, Poole and Borholm) that Westies may now be slight favourites.

Definitely time for Thurlow to finally step up and turn that potential into a great game. How he goes could the major factor in whether we are victorious.

Of those named on the bench I'd go with three midfielders given its going to be a hot day and we need players with run. So my choice would be Batley, Appleton and Sinor.

Feel very sorry for Bomber. A great guy that has done well for himself. A true clubman that should be very proud of his football.

Question: have there been many times when a team has won the league's wooden spoon and the reserve premiership in the same year?

As a South supporter, I know my spoons but can't remember too many reserves premierships.

West Torrens finished 9th in 1984 - the Reserves won the Flag (I was in the CS that day) David McKay was Captain of the Ressies

WEST
West Adelaide is set to be boosted by the return of star pair Adam Hartlett and Taite Silverlock for Sunday’s SANFL IGA League Grand Final at the Adelaide Oval.
Both struck down by soft tissue injuries during the major round, Hartlett and Silverlock proved their fitness at training on Wednesday night.
Hartlett, named at centre-half back, injured his quad in the first term of the Second Semi-Final while Silverlock strained his hamstring in the second half of the Qualifying Final.
‘’Adam came up really well at training and is ready to go,’’ West football manager Andrew Marks said.
‘’Taite got through the whole session and they have both been given the all-clear from our physio which is positive.’’
Defender Logan Hill and goalsneak Aaron Fielke have also been included after missing the Preliminary Final due to having concussion from separate incidents in the Second Semi-Final.
‘’They have been checked throughout the week and last night (Wednesday) and are all OK to play,’’ Marks said.
McDonald’s SA Under-18 players Jack Agostino and Jadyn Brind – who made his League debut in the Preliminary Final – are the unlucky players to miss out at this stage, with two more to be trimmed before the bounce.
‘’It’s very difficult for them to miss out,’’ Marks said.
‘’They certainly didn’t do anything wrong last week, we’ve just opted to select the experienced players who have done the job all season.’’
Key forward Daniel Webb, originally from Flagstaff Hill, will play his 100th SANFL match in the Grand Final after making his debut for the Bloods in 2009.

It does appear that things are falling into place nicely for West. If there ever was a chance to break that drought, then this is it.

However we do have 8 players from the 2011 flag side; plus Boyd - they know what it takes to win one.

Given our midfield depth will be tested this week I wonder if Godden would be tempted to put Goldsworthy back into the midfield. I think Batley could easily cover his position on the HBF and he has demonstrated in the past he can be damaging when playing onball as well as kick 1-2 goals each match.

Yes, also with Batley on one flank and Jarrad on the other both will provide similar dash off of that line

Don't think Batley will make the final 21.
Whittlesea I believe should make the final 21. Thurlow with an injury riddled season most probably won't have the tank to do as much rucking as Borholm. When Thurlow is benched I would think Ainger would go into ruck and Whittlesea to CHF or Whittlesea straight into ruck. Would think Matt Appleton and Joe Sinor would come in to form part of the interchange bench.
My Outs: Borholm, Rowntree, Poole and Batley.

My Ins: Thurlow, Whittlesea, Sinor and Appleton.

With the Eagles missing 3 of their starting 4 from the engine room, coupled with the inclusion of Westies this week, I've got a gut feel it might be a boil over.

Westies to end their 32 year drought by 46 points.
PAFC. Forever.

Yeah, certainly seems like little things are running Westies favour, bit like they did for the Eagles in 2011.

Scores:
WA 2.3 7.4 11.9 15.10
EA 3.2 6.6 8.7 10.9

Be very tight, around 8 goals each until the 20 minutes into 3rd when some hard, desperate, inspirational, not-lose-their-chance moments from some of the experienced players like Porps, Schmidt, Caire, Green will see a break away and then will kick the first goal in the last to keep that gap for the rest of the game.

I reckon Batley will miss and Giles Ellis will come in for his run and ball carrying ability.

Ellis has lots of speed (Batley does as well btw) but is very skinny and raw. I saw him play a few games late in the season and he didn't do much at all. In particular he did not stand up well in the last match against norwood which had high intensity and pressure. He will be a good player in a year or two but just isn't up to standard just yet, particularly for a grand final.

Batley has more experience, is stronger and has the ability to play a running midfielder or a defensive sweeper. I'd be shocked if he was left out over Ellis.

I'm also suprised that Rowland hasn't been talked of too much as a possible replacement. I thought he did quite well early this year when given a couple of opportunities. It seems most people believe Appleton and Sinor will be the two midfield replacements. I wouldn't be bringing in another tall such as Whittlesea as this will upset the balance we have used in the last half of the season (where Ainger is used as the backup ruckman). I also am not convinced that Boyd is 100% right and could easily see him re-injuring his groin during the match so having more midfielders on the bench would be handy.

That was the general consensus at the pub last night, a lot of people wanted to go but we're insulted by the price.
