Statement from the club has said Nick has been let go by South! Anyone on here know more about this surprising and baffling outcome?

This better be isolated....

The Executive of the South Adelaide Football Club convened an extra ordinary meeting on Tuesday night (16th June 2015) to be briefed on circumstances that had recently come to light regarding co-captain Nick Murphy’s failure to meet his obligations to the club and senior coach Brad Gotch.

It is the club’s view that on a number of occasions over a period of time Nick has shown poor judgement and has not met the minimum standards required of the club.

Nick was immediately summoned to a meeting with Chairman Andrew Luckhurst-Smith and Senior Coach Brad Gotch last night whereby his services were terminated with immediate effect.

There will be no further statement by the club.

Wayne Peters
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Reads as a pretty strong message, maybe to address a cultural concern or the like?

How big a loss, onfield, is that for South?

Well he was the Captain so I'd say it's a substantial loss................

Yeah I get that he was captain, but I certainly get the feeling he wasn't at the same rating as Cross and Liddle for example. From memory he was also an outcast a few years back?

Well he's definitely a loss to our midfield prob have him in our best 6 to 7 middies with Cross, Liddle, Gotch, Macleod, Veide & Gulden.

yes, by his own admission made a few 'poor choices' when Ronnie was coaching.

No, not in the class of those players you mentioned, but was an important cog in the midfield, and from time to time did a solid defensive role also.

What odds he'll end up at WWT?

Wasn't he given an internal suspension for failing to show up to a recovery session a couple of years ago? Maybe he didn't learn from that mistake

I think he was close to signing with Norwood, at some stage in recent seasons...

I think he lives at Magill, so that would be ideal for him...

Central could do with another midfielder...

I think that Murphy may have his eyes on another prospect

So not as far north as Elizabeth, then?

If he plays for another club at least the South players will get hit on the chest when he passes the ball by foot when they play against him!

Decision made by our coach who has high standards on and off the field.

There would be good reasons for this call. (wont go into them here)

Let's just say I would take it he was given plenty of chances .......

Personally I think Nick was fortunate to regain the captaincy after losing it a couple of years ago...
he was given a second chance...not many get that....and he has let the players and the club down again it seems...

I hope this is the gutsy decision that leads the Panthers to the right track. It seems they try so much, reinvent themselves every five years or so and then fall back to mediocrity again and again. The long suffering panthers fan deserves his picture in the dictionary next to the word "patience". It'd be easy to bag this decision from a distance, but hard decisions need to be made before success. Without being privy to the background story I just hope it is as I've described it. I'd rather South bring home the flag than any of the others currently in the 5. (wouldn't mind Westies winning it though)

Agree with your comments therisingblues. Time will reveal if this was a good or bad thing and we needn't wait long. How the club performs in our next game against Sturt will reveal much about how this decision effects players attitude. Further to that, if at the end of the year there is a mass exodus of players or they stay committed to SAFC this outcome can be traced back to this decision.

There must be more to this than just standards or culture.

Culture is a broad brush term in these circumstances. The balance of player skills v character in the SANFL is an issue that Centrals has faced in the past 3 years.
