Players returning from the AFL

With some discussion from Eagles fans about whether Jarrad Wright deserves to be playing league footy, got me thinking about players who have returned from the AFL and haven't really fired a shot at league level. Understand for some there may be mitigating circumstances, but also makes you wonder what the AFL clubs saw in these players to begin with. For the main, excluding players like Gilbert McAdam who had distinguished AFL careers.

Here are some I thought of:
Jarrad Wright
Izaac Thompson (Eagles)
Harry Miller
Ricky O'Loughlin
Isaac Weetra
Bennet Copping
Sundqvist ?? (Bays)
James Wasley (although he did play some decent footy for Collingwood)

Who else comes to mind

Kris Massie hasn't had a great year at Norwood thus far in 2009 (his first as a Norwood only player) - However he is proven at this level (and above of course) and still has time to turn it around.

Interesting to compare to McGregor, who has been pretty good, given they were of a similar standing at AFL level ie useful but no star. Pehaps McGregor saw the writing on the wall, whereas Massie wanted to get redrafted IIRC?

Im not sure mate, I think Mass probably suffered a bit from a less than desirable pre-season and the frustration that followed ... His committment every time he's donned the Red and Blue could never be questioned, and Im sure he'll come good sooner rather than later

Yeah he's an interesting one Jimmy ... When I first saw him I thought he had talent in spades, his decline has been quite remarkable.

I know a lot of people refer back to that clash with Tyson Stenglein, but surely there's more to it than that?

I reckon benny has been pretty stiff back at Sturt, he's been in great form for the ressies, was runner up or 3rd in the Res Magarey last year I think and has always been in the best players, also servicable when given a go in the A's. If he was at most other SANFL clubs he'd be playing most weeks.

He's had 2 bad head clashes since that one, another in the AFL I think and one in the Ressies for Sturt a few years ago, has come good since then, from what I know he's just having a year off, not sure but I'd hope he'd be back for Sturt next year.

Isn't he playing for Bridgewater in the hills league?

Wade Thompson was playing ressies for us Saturday after playing AFL not that long ago.
And I don't know what the Crows have done to Gilly but they've turned a champion player into a complete duffer. :(

Quite often players that aren't good enough for our league are closer to selection with the Power than us.

I'm not sure exactly what the AFL Dogs did to Cameron Faulkner to 'develop' his career...
Was a waste on our list last season.

thats pretty harsh, he has only played 3 games back from a hammy and he has gone to half back most of the time with all the talls the roosters have. and what the crows have done has help with his decision making and now he is one of the most Aerobically fit players at the crows

One of the worst recruits I've ever seen. And I'm not bagging your club, I thought he was going to be good get. He was awful!

Totally agree, with one correction. THE worst recruit!

So....what the heck happened? Seeing him play last year was sad, the guy put in the most insipid efforts I think I've seen on a football field. Didn't he quit by about Round 8?

Not sure exactly. Was never mentally switched on after getting cut by WBs. Certainly wasn't switched on in any return games for us, and went walkabouts, as you say, prior to mid-season. Sad is the right word. Was a very talented young footballer.
