New Super League

Postby SABRE » Thu May 28, 2009 12:49 pm

If mega rich sponsors tried to blow the AFL out of the water (Kerry Packer style), with a new
Super League comprising all local league teams from around Australia, would you support it ?

Isn't going to happen -who would these "mega rich" sponsors be??

Time to move on Sabre, we all know that the AFL is really an expanded VFL, but that's the way it is.
It's far too entrenched now for any "rebel league" to compete against it.
Having said that if there was a MAJOR impasse of some kind between a number of clubs and the league, then maybe...

It was a spectacular failure for rugby league, with pretty much all the Super League teams (bar Melbourne Storm) gone from the NRL, and the NRL still effectively a NSW/ACT competition played at suburban grounds ala the SANFL, so why would it work for football?

Cheers Interceptor.
If the majority are satisfied with the status quo, fine. I’m not trying to flog a dead horse, but
nothing stays the same forever. If, in the future, the CEO’s of say…an airline, a large bank,
a petroleum company and a national media conglomerate got together, anything is possible.

Having discussed this with family & few mates, we just wondered what percentage of people on
this forum (who really care about their clubs & state leagues) would prefer if the possibility of an
alternative arose. It doesn’t hurt to ask. If you have an opinion, vote.

Who knows, there may be a few ‘white knights’ out there looking for the next big thing if the
seeds are sown.

For me it would depend on a couple things like if there are going to be Divisions like in English soccer and which one will my club be in and will there be a FA cup style comp on top of a normal season.

:(
You know how to hurt a guy Brucetiki.
Bloody NRL made a 3 time loser out of me. I grew up playing rugby in Sydney (mostly Union),
but had to keep changing league affiliations due to NRL stupidity.
My family came from Newtown, moved to North Sydney, then we came to Adelaide.
Who did the flamin’ NRL get rid of? The Bluebags, the Bears and the Rams!
3 outa’ 3 the mongrels! A man can’t win a trick sometimes.
Newtown, now called The Jets, are the oldest league club in Australia
and are forced to play in Sydney’s 2nd division. ‘Not happy Jan !’

Re your question, I don't think QLD would like you calling the NRL ‘a NSW/ACT competition’,
but I know what you mean. The major difference, I suppose, is that NRL was breaking new
ground in Perth & Adelaide. An 'aussie rules' Super League would not have to.
Apart from the Swans and Lions, local leagues have been playing in Sydney and Brisbane for
many years now and they may well want to compete in their own right. Not everyone enjoys
being a 2nd rate feeder system for Victorians. Or maybe they could join later.

Brucetiki, I’m still trying to fathom why the NRL sh*t-canned the Adelaide Rams.
There always seemed to be great crowds and support at Adelaide Oval. Does anyone else know?
I became that disgusted with the NRL after losing 3 clubs in a row, that I turned my back on
them forever!

I see your point, but I don't think it's the same situation, even without NRL's mismanagement and
shortsightedness. Forget about the nuts & bolts of establishing a Super League.
The question is purely theoretical. Who would support it, i.e. prefer it, to the current AFL,
IF it were possible to go ahead ?

fwiw, I would prefer a return to the state league system, SANFL, VFL, WAFL, and if QLD and NSW want a state league then that's cool too. And a return to the COA competition.

I read comments on here that the SANFL would die if the AFL died in SA and that's possibly true, particularly whilst the AFL continues in the other states. But if the AFL ceased to exist altogether, would that release more sponsorship for all the state leagues, and of course bigger crowds at state league games.

Of course it's all pointless becuase there is as much chance of the AFL disappearing as the EPL and whilst there is AFL there will never be any other "super league" I don't think finanaces would allow it as all the big clubs and big money is already tied up.

25 years ago with the VFL financially on its knees, it might have worked. Not now, the game would experience too much turmoil when stability is required.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Super League wasn't a failure. Its been going for over a decade in the UK and has improved the game no end there.
And the Mighty Leeds Rhinos are aiming for the threepeat this year!
You could probably argue it wasnt a failure here too as it achieved exactly what News Ltd wanted, having the game covered on Foxtel.

I voted NO. A purely commercial league would be much more in the control of the commercial media like Telstra/Foxtel.
My resistance to being forced to subscribe to pay TV would mean I would probably rarely see any match that interested me.
I would then take the opportunity to dump watching TV at all, and I would lose interest entirely in football with time.

Psyb, you would have grown up in an era where there was far less coverage than there is today, you got around this (presumably) by attending the footy more often, which would be the way to solve it again.
