Darel Hart

Accoring to today's Advertiser Darel Hart has stepped down as SA state league coach :D :D :D - he has stated that he wants to give someone else the opportunity but has said should the SANFL not be able to find a suitable replacement before our next game in 2011 that he would consider coaching the side again. This leads to the next question and that is who should be the next coach. My thoughts are perhaps the premiership coach from the previous year. What are others thoughts ?

I would favor the position to remain as it currently is being held by an experienced coach that is not currently coaching so that they can give 100% of their time and resources to the job. Based around that idea, I dont see age being a barrier.

Here are a few suggestions of names that might be worth another look, All of whom have experience at taking sides into the SANFL finals.

Michael Nunan,
Alan Stewart,
Robert Pyman.

We actually discussed this very topic this morning on the Outside 50 Show on 5RPH...

(Podcast links for above show here - Part 1: http://www.rphadelaide.org.au/links/O501.mp3 Part 2: http://www.rphadelaide.org.au/links/O502.mp3

Darel stated 3 years ago that he will no longer take the reigns as coach once the side loses a game...

He of course had a pretty good record since then with a 3 - 1 win loss ratio since taking the helm from Alastair Clarkson after the 2003 season...

A very close win over the Vics in Melbourne back in '05 (no game played for SA in '04), a 3 goal win against WA undeer lights at Adelaide Oval back in '06 and of course the 10 goal triumph over the Big V last year, again at Adelaide Oval...

This recent loss to WA in Perth by the narrowest of margins will see the mantle taken over by a new coach and there are many angles to look at in terms of finding a replacement...

I mentioned this morning to Warren Partland on the Outside 50 Show the suggestion of reinstating the old system of rewarding the previous seasons Premiership coach as the man in charge of the SANFL Croweaters...

All were in agreeance that someone of the calibre of a Roy Laird would do a very good job but I guessthere could then be some conjecture as to whether or not there would be any bias shown towards that coaches own club...

Personally, I think it should be a one-off coach who does not have any immediate association within a current SANFL club. As mentioned, Darel said in today's Advertiser that the door is not completely shut should the league not be able to find a canditate worthy of appointing so I guess it may not be the last we see of Mr Hart...

The other factor that would have to be considered is whether or not the SANFL decide to look at giving the side a "run" in their 'State League bye' next season, perhaps against a Tasmania or Queensland...

If a new coach would be appointed, be it for a "trial game" against another state in 2010 or against our next scheduled opponent, Victoria in Melbourne, in 2012, I guess a few names that may be thrown in the ring 'could' be Geoff Morris or like mentioned above, a Robert Pyman or even a Jack Cahill perhaps ?

Just some food for thought I guess...

I know some may see it as further cheapening of the comp, but what about considering an up and coming coach, like an assistant or Reserves premiership coach? (lol very possibly a stupid idea, but just throwing idea's out there)

In recent years it could have provided blokes like MacGowan and Norman (eg) an opportunity.

His great State coaching would be a great source of achievement For Daryl
Would be a consolation for his below par NA coaching days
Great playing career
Great guy to chat with
Just needs to back more winners

Im pretty sure Roy Laird was quoted somewhere a while back about his thoughts on coaching the state team at some stage.

His response was along the lines that it's hard enough to find enough time in his schedule now with Centrals, family and work nevermind having the issue/worry of coaching the state team.

At a guess i think this would be a common response from the current coaches.

Totally out of left field, would they consider giving someone who is openely passionate one eyed South Australian like KG or Cornsey even Malcolm Blight the job in attempt to bring back the old state of origin rivalries. Something like Cornsey coaching SA and Kevin Sheedy coaching the big V.

I know it's a bit out there and ill cop flack but it's just an idea.

I don't see why players can represent the state and an SANFL Coach cannot......

that's not fair.....

When Darel Hart got the gig he was an ex-SANFL coach with an average record.

If the SANFL looks for a person of similar qualification next year, then Trevor Hill will be a shoe-in.

Not stupid at all I reckon CP...

One of my initial thoughts was current Glenelg Reserves coach and assistant to Darel Hart last week in Pert, Michael Godden...

Comes with some good wraps, is a very good coach and coached the State Under 20's side last season...

Is aparently well liked by all players he deals with and I know many people who think he will go on to make a good league coach...

Harty, like him or not was the ideal sort of person for the job as he gets to a lot of different SANFL games as part of his role with the Crows and could dedicate a fair chunk of time and committment to it none of which a current SANFL coach could.
And its all well and good to criticise him as a coach (god knows I did in 2003!) but people tend to forget his record with the Crows as assistant and previous stint with North.
History will show him as one of the best state coaches we had in recent times only being behind Mick Nunan.

They might want to pick Queensland if its just for a "run" after the way that the side from Tasmania, who perhaps a number of people in the SANFL didnt take seriously enough! Last time they played the TFL sent the SANFL side back to Adelaide soundly beaten! :?

Maybe that's because we had Cahill as coach for that game.
