robert shirley

it was one of the most lowest acts i've seen in sanfl football & i haven't seen anything remotely that low since the 1991 grand final & this was worse, i know you can say he's innocent until proven guilty but i saw it as did most spectators who were on that side of the ground (halF forward grandstand side) & he IS GUILTY OF A SPEAR TACKLE & imho he should get a minimum of 5 games, lets face it it is even outlawed in rugby league. hopefully the young west lad is going to be ok, this low act could possibly end shirleys afl career & if it does it serves him right. ROBERT SHIRLEY IT WAS A LOW ACT SON

i didn't see or hear what happened but if he did a spear tackle and he gets off the SANFL is weak as piss. This is a sickening tackle and even the NFL has outlawed it. You need to protect players and if he doesn't get at least 4 weeks for what he did it will be open season in the SANFL and the player will be able to do what they want with no fear with a suspension.

There's no need for a witch hunt here bayman - this sort of discussion could have been left for the match review thread. I'm not condoning the incident - I can't really comment about it as I didn't see what happened but enough is enough. The incident was reported - he will appear at the tribunal and we'll see what happens next.

i don't think you'd appreciate one of your bays players singled out like your doing to shirls. This sort of incident is well and truly outside of his character in fact I consider him one of the fairest and cleanest players in the comp.

The good thing about is that Shirley has contacted Fisher today. Fisher still has Numbness in the head and the neck

Which makes it a point of discussion in it's own right - Do the media keep reports just to match-day reviews or do they invoke further interest?

just an editorial if you like, it wouldn't matter what club it is (INCLUDING GLENELG) if any player from any club does something that is clearly wrong & i see it i'll comment, THE FACT IS IT WAS A LOW ACT & a players head is & should be protected, perhaps shirley should chat to neil schashe, i hope the west player (fisher) ends up being 110% as i'd hate to see anyone ending up in a wheelchair, as for his character i agree he's never shown that type of behaviour but that doesn't help fisher, it must be punished to the full extent as we don't want speartackling coming into the sanfl, i think speartackling is worse than the 'old time king hit'

It rarely happens in our game because of its nature, I doubt he'll get hit too hard as there's no law against it because of its rarity unlike in League so he'll only be done for something like Rough Conduct which Im sure can't get too many games.
It'll be an interesting one.

Funny bayman must have missed the head high tackle that resulted in Daniel going off reluctantly on a stretcher after shirleys act .The umpire also reluctantly paid a free after calling play on and waving his arms .No report in that head high tackle while all others this year and last have resulted in reports.

And why did u not notice this one bayman mate .I saw the look on the westies player face when he did his act and he meant it mate.

i saw it & it wasn't good but it was more an accident with dodging players & we've all seen them free kick etc was justified but you can not compare the 2 incidents, i actually think shirleys action won west adelaide the game

Ive already posted on this in the WA/EG post game thread
I have mentioned that Robbie Spearley is a fair player and this is so uncharacteristic for him
Coach Andy Collins has made some scathing comments in todays Sunday MAiL

On face value it looks like a 6 week suspension
It was a careless tackle by Robbie Spearley
But becoz Spearley has been a fair footballer for a long time about 3 weeks would be suffice

Thiele has posted that Robbie Spearley has contacted Fisher which is a very good guesture

Its was a regrettable incident and unfortunately Spearley must be suspended
The SANFL needs to set a precedent

Bayman was irate and became extremely vocal at Shirley
Not one Eagles supporter or any supporter in the crowd retalliated against Bayman
That would suggest that almost all EG supporters knew that Spearley did a bad bad thing

Ive had this discussion with Smac [ PA V CD Butcher/Mccabe]
If a child saw this
How does a parent explain to his child what happened
Could this sway the child away from Footy to another sport ?

An elderly lady in front of Bayman and I was very concerned seeing this
She was concerned at the incident
She turned around to us and said
" Can you imagine his mother seeing this."

I can see this thread going this way
WA supporters having a go at Spearley
EG supporters trying to divert this incident to another incident involving WAs Morris[a fair bump]
EG supporters saying its a mans game and this is part and parcel
NUETRAL supporters[As i am] will no doubt condemn Spearleys action

EG are running out of players now
Perhaps Robbie Spearley when suspended can be replaced by Jason Spher...

You're both imbecile's.

You've disrespected West Adelaide by contemplating that they needed this incident to win the game.... They deserved to win because they worked harder.

There is no comparison between the two incidents. Shirley was in the wrong, the other was a fair bump in my opinion. The hysteria though around the issue is wrong - Shirley is a good quality person who respects his club the SANFL comp and its players and the fact that he has contacted the player in question does not surprise me at all. It is the mark of him as an individual. But, he was in the wrong and will be suspended. And rightly so, but his record should absolutely be taken into account.

Take a deep breath you fools, this does happen in sport no matter if we'd like to see it or not. It doesn't make it right or wrong and the SANFL tribunal will act accordingly and judge whether it was.

Whip up a storm fellas, enjoy egging each other on.

Interesting that WAFC Coach Andy Collins was quoted discussing the incident in the Sunday Mail and clearly was not happy about what has occured, no doubt placing pressure-expectation that the tribunal will have to do something about it, yet if there is no rule against Spear Tackling, it makes it a little difficult to second guess what the tribunal can or will do about it. If its just a rough play charge he could well get off with a caution.

The whole 'Spearly' thing is so lame.

I would suggest the elderly lady hasn't been to many football matches pre-1990's if she's seriously worried about that incident over what happened in the 70's and 80's. But, I think that she was most likely referring to a mother who watches her child get injured in any situation on the football field - not just that incident.

The hysteria, driven by you, that says would this send a person to another code? Well, injuries happen in all sports and in most there is a chance that someone can get hurt if someone breaks the rules. Shirley broke them and will be punished. If someone moves codes because of it, after he has been dealt with by the tribunal then sh*t happens.

I take back my imbecile comment in relation to you but would add that you should be careful generalising in these circumstances because the way you see this thread ending up couldn't be further from my feelings.

I'll add here that Collins comments were interesting..... Commenting on cases before the tribunal??? Poor form..... Leave it to us experts on this forum! ;)

Agreed with you on this one matt - Andy Collins should be content with the win and jump back in his box where he belongs. There was no need to make such a public comment about incident before it appears in the tribunal.

I tend to agree with you Micky - I thought the bump on Daniel was wreckless (maybe that should have been reported.

Just trying to work out what happened here amongst all the hyperbole

Was it just a tackle gone wrong, or was it a deliberate pick up and spear tackle?

What happened to the West player after this? Was he injured? Did he go off on a stretcher?

Firstly hope that Ben Fisher will make a speedy recovery, certainaly not the type of incident we want to see, remember a similar situation, as im sure many Eagles supporters would, happening to former player Ben Higgins at Noarlunga Oval going back 8-10 years ago.
I didnt see the incident so am not going to comment on it, as it was in the play I would assume there will be vision of it and that this would be used at the tribunal and that those who are empowered by the league will take the action that they feel is necessary based on the facts that they are presented with.
