Round 8 - Sturt v South @ Unley

Postby Big Phil » Tue May 12, 2009 9:54 pm

So how much will Brant Chambers beat South Adelaide by this week ???

Of course, said tounge in cheeck, but with the form the Double Blues are in and of course their spearhead in fine touch after an 11 goal haul last week, surely this game is a case of Sturt by how much and who is going to stop big "Gas" ?

For me, I think Nick McKenna should get the job on big Chambo as he is probably South's strongest defender. With this game on ABC TV, it is set up for the possibility of an old Rick Davies goal kicking record to be broken (15 goals in a league game for Sturt)

At this stage, for me - Sturt by 69 points

Always makes me nervous, this kind of analogy.
Last Saturday all the stars (and eagles players) lined up for Chambo.

Reckon it was the Hannibal Lector head gear that scared the bejeezus out of the eagles defenders......."come near me and I will eat you with potato rosti!".
Reckon he has to go the head gear again this week.

Seriously, this week is a new challenge and how things may unfold is hard to predict. The Blues have been a bit less Chambo-centric this season and necessarily so, given opposition defensive tactics.

lets look at the reserves, with South Being Second bottom and roosters being bottom but having the bye will all AFL based Roosters players play for South Ressies.

That means they will have Nick Gill, Marlon Motlop, Phil Davis, Rory Sloane and Tony Armstrong and Maybe Daniel Stewart but he has played all games for the roosters, the rest of the players still need match fitness.

The choice is up to the AFL club to allow them to play for the bottom reserves side, they normally only do that if they are coming back from injury, not if they have played in the last week. The only person that could be looked at is Nick Gill.

On the game I would be looking at Sturt continuing their hard attack of the football and the use and run of the ball. They wouldnt be taking it easy, just because South are bottom doesnt mean that they could push Sturt. South will come out in the first quarter playing real hard, it is up to them to see if they will do that for 4 quarters though. South will try and play their flooding game, Sturt need to be prepared for it.

Too much skill and too much confidence after last weeks effort. Sturt by at least 10 goals... 8)

10 goals easy....from what I saw from South last weekend, Sturt should thump us by at least 20 goals.

We have not got a forward
We have no defenders to sit on Chambo
We dont have much of a engine unit.....Parry is doing the whole lot.

It wont be pretty......

Im going with a few Sturt people so realy looking forward to the day....NOT!!!! :(
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Sturt by plenty, I would say 100pts, but I do think that this time around Sturt will take the foot off in the last 1/4 to prepare for Norwood on Friday night.

Forget about the scoreboard this weekend, without getting into the whole South coaching/leadership issue again what do Panther supporters honestly feel about Sampson's performance so far this year? is there progress with some of the younger guys?, is the team as a whole playing with spirit and determination?
I have followed an under manned side before which is laying a foundation for future success and you take something out of most performances, as well as under manned sides which are going nowhere and there is a difference.
Not sure yet which category the Panthers are in.

My thoughts on Sampson is that he is unsuitable for the role at South as it currently stands. South need a Phil Carman "Builder" style coach, not an AFL Tactician type coach, at this point there is little reason to play the various types of zone game plans etc if the players are having basic skill issues. The major problem at South is these skill errors which are resulting in easy turnovers and forward line entrys to the opposition.

Jack Cahill has a far better winning record than Sampson in the few games that he coached the club all with a list considered far thinner than Sampsons current list, I think that is enough evidence to suggest that it is not working, Cahill was able to function well within the Building role and it clearly has and is showing.

Yet for the same reasons that Cahill left the club are the reasons that a decent type of Builder coach such as Nunan, Carman or Stewart would be highly unlikely to consider coaching the club.

Im with you Sojouner, it ain't working.

The club as the idea it is only concentrating on recruiting from the Southern Football League - they need to look at the bigger picture and get their head out of the sand. Players already have left the club to go back to their local club.

Our win/loss record is terrible. We have the lowest scores for and against.
We have been told it will take 5 years to see any result and be patient. I have heard this excuse since I have supported South.

I believe we need a "hard nut" coach to stamp out the dead wood and get rid of the "she'll be right" mentality. Losing seems to be accepted down there.

This is Sampson's 2nd year and we are no where near up to a SANFL league side. The skills shown are shocking. From what I have seen we are worse than last year!!!

....but we are constantly told....."She'll be right"

An interesting pespective, thanks for that.
Ultimately i guess Sampson will be given some more time as further instability, particularly when it involves a 'favourite son' type figure, would just about be the end of South

Each week is a new challenge for south and if we play as crap as last weekend we will get absolutely demolished!
The midfield is performing as poor as I have ever seen so the forwards and defenders are sitting ducks!
In the last quater against the maggies the coaching staff threw Mitch Sandery into the middle and he at least won the ball and has the bodie size and strength to mix it.He has been the one shining light for us so far this season, and although not the most skilled player he has shown some of the other blokes how to get the best out of himself. If some of the other blokes could take a leaf out of his book we would not be as bad as we currently are!
A message for the coaches, leave Mitch in the midfield!
