Umpires

Postby Mickyj » Sun Apr 12, 2009 10:48 am

After watching three rounds this year .Is there something up with the standard of umpiring or are they trying to influence the out comes of games .
The games Eagles V Centrals and Eagles V Glenelg some very iffy umpiring decisions favouring the two GF teams .And then the turn around after 3/4 time yesterday very strange .
But there was no such umpiring issues against West .

Perhaps its nothing but am I smelling some one trying to make sure certain crowd pulling teams make it into the finals.
Something to ponder football fans

I don't believe that would happen.

I did see the game between Eagles and Glenelg yesterday and didn't see a lot wrong, although I have to say I saw McConnell gather the ball and have a shot for goal. The shot bounced off a team mate and only travelled about 25 metres to Meyer in the goal square. The umpire paid the mark!!

Everyone was surprised. It seems there were only three people at the ground who didn't know the ball had taken a diversion, and they were all umpires. Very strange. :)

i noticed dereck woodcock umpiring the reserves yesterday now is that part of the rotation system or was he dropped ? one of the better umpires going around imho & overall i think our umpires are a lot lot better than their afl (primma donna) counterparts
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

In the u18s Eagles v Central game in round 1 the game was even at half time, Eagles went forward went through for a point and everyone saw it except for the goal umpire who said it was a goal and changed the game.

I admire your support for your club and the great job you obviously do, ME, but I thought Glenelg finished up winning by 15 goals :D

Did you leave out a smiley?

Whether the stats prove it or not, I've believed for many years that umpires at all levels favour better sides, throughout all grades. I truly believe 'better' players get looked after more than less gifted players, through all grades of football. My opinion only, but it's my belief.

I reckon the standards been very good. Least they are consistent with decisions unlike the AFL where its a lottery.

I haven't noticed them at all this year , which usually indicates a well umpired game

He was dropped for missing an elbow in the round 2 game that he umpired.

Well we have had Richard Williams umpire u19s games in the past, but that could be under rotation.

Yep. Its a conspiracy against the lower supported sides like Eagles, South and West. A 5000-10000 difference in finals crowds can make or break the SANFL financially. So they definately feel it is worth advising the umpires to favour the clubs with larger support bases.

Funny though, a lot of the time I feel we get a raw deal from the umps its against your mob.

I don't think the umps go out of their way to favour anyone. They make errors at times like everyone. Occasionally teams playing the better footy may get a run on in free kicks but usually that's because they are playing in front.

Occasionally players are umpired differently but, once again this is not done on purpose e.g. a first year player told to wait and not play on whereas Judd can. That was not a conscious thing though.

would that have been when you guys couldn't win a game ?
Funny when I watch Eagle players running into an open goal and the defender attacks the Eagles players head its play on no free there .Yep its all in my mind .

As I said in my first post it could be nothing just very bad umpires.

To suggest that umpires purposely go out and favour a team over the other is rediculous.

Put it down to bad umpiring. Sometimes you get a raw deal and other times you get a good run. Cancels out eventually.
