Bayman, he started in their forward lines but Thurstan beat him easily. Got moved to the backlines befoe he got dragged in the last quarter. It was a vey scrappy style of football that Westies play, they like to try and play the Hawthorn zone style of football which isnt going to work for them. Sturt got over the line but we made some fundamental errors which costs us some goals at time.

West to their credit had Sturt for the first 1/4 and into the 2nd but lost the edge after that, saying that Sturt didn't plet at all well for that period and skills were awful, to a point which can lose a game in a 1/4 and a 1/2. Summary- Long hard road for West....again

West made far too many mistakes, they would have good passages of play then a mistake would come and bang all their hard work would be undone by Sturt. Several times they were setting up to go forward only to stuff it up and pay for it on the score board.

i heard today that collins has until the end of may to show why he should remain at the helm...reasonably reliable source...bit harsh if true, from memory he's only been there 1 full season(?)

i only saw the second half today but westies were pretty woeful. do the bloods supporters feel the team is moving in the right direction for future success???

as for sturt, i think the departures at the end of last year have actually proved beneficial. some great young players have secured spots and will form the basis of a successful team for the next 3-5 years at least...

1. No, rumor not true -- is his second year.

2. Yes there is signs of improvement however at this time of development tend to run hot/cold --- give away goals with errors from overuse of ball -- when resolved well who knows.

3. Time will tell but I like the look of several of the Sturt kids

1. Hope you're right. Any coach deserves at least 2 full seasons in my opinion.

2. Hope you're right. West need to show their supporters something after years of disappointment. (Can't see them doing much in the next couple of years though...)

I keep thinking it was only a couple of years ago West were taking everyone before them but 2003 is already well into the past. Missed opportunity for them.

True, but even then, they got nowhere near beating us at Unley

When I walked into Unley Oval yesterday, I could have sworn I saw a sign that said "Abandon hope all ye West supporters who enter here", but the remaining loyal Bloods supporters certainly didn't do that.

We should have.

The day started pretty well. I'd read on the Sturt fan's website that their Reserves`side would keep the scoreboard changing rapidly and it would be an embarrassing result. Well, it did and it was. The scoreboard behinds tally for Sturt changed rapidly, very rapidly. The goals tally for West didn't change as often as that, but it changed more often than Sturt's. Westies led, got caught and got passed. West hadn't read the script and came home with a wet sail and won by 2 goals. Seeing that West's previous performance against the Eagles had been terrible, it was something of a shock to all.

A pleasant shock to me, though.

And so to the league game. West were hard at it in a good first quarter. Sturt's disposal under pressure was ragged and they coughed the ball up consistently, but a couple of lace-out passes to Chambers saw them only narrowly behind at quarter time.

The first part of the second quarter was fairly even, but then we entered Gum time. Number 23 for Sturt was everywhere in a remarkable display, including 2 goals and plenty of penetration.

There was only 21 points in it at half-time, but the trend of the game had changed and that trend continued. Every time a Sturt player was shut down, another took his place. Evans got a heap of it, Martin had a paddock to himself and Coad marshalled the backlines. Button looked promising and Smith played on-ball after a while and was more than useful.

West tried hard, but after dominating possession in their two previous games, they couldn't get the footy yesterday. The defence stood up until late in the game, but sheer weight of possession told in the end. Jason Farrier, playing his first game with the assignment of standing Brant Chambers performed pretty well. Chambers kicked 4 out of 17, getting them from a free kick and three passes that any of the spectators would've marked, so good was the disposal. Ferguson held down CHB well, but West didn't get any drive or cohesion from defence.

Those experts who have been bemoaning Cupido playing in defence were noticeably quiet. Playing at full-forward, he held some good marks, but they were few and far between as the supply just wasn't there. That supply often starts with Damien Cupido in defence. James Ezard was one West player who took the game on and tried to ignite his team and Hamish Hartlett's skills stood out as one West player who could hit a target, but it wasn't West's day. Gaining the first clearance of the last quarter and kicking it to Sturt's forwards was just too much even for Blood's fans who were used to disappointment.

For nearly the first time in memory, West finished with a positive free kick count.

As for Sturt, under former West player, Luke Norman, they're a much harder and more even team than in recent years, with a fair bit of talent. As an aside, I noticed a fair talent in their Reserves - Jack Trengove is certainly one to watch.

So far, the Bloods have been much improved this year. Yesterday was a not-needed revisiting of the bad days, but I've been expecting an unlikely win or being on the wrong end of a bad loss. That's what happens - 2 steps forward, one step back.

So much for a day at the Footy. Depressing, but lessons learnt.

Being a westies supporter, going to many of there games, they are a rabble. Same excuses every week. About time westies got replaced by Goodwood in the SANFL and westies went to DIV6 Amature league they might win there
