South Adelaide

Interesting snippet I caught on tonights news is that South now want to be referred to as Panthers at all times, virtually dropping South Adelaide as a name. Very interesting, obviously a marketing thing, not sure I would like my club to go down that path.

What do Panthers supporters think?

Yes, that is exactly what is next. Stand by for a change in 2010 to the Geelong style jumper that South wore around the late 50s/early 60s. I heard they wanted the change this season but couldn't get it approved by the SANFL in time.

It does seem a little comical to have SA splashed across the jumper whilst at the same time saying they don't wish to be referred to as South Adelaide .. it would be a bit like Norwood wanting to be known as Redlegs but changing the colour of their socks :)

The irony of changing the style of jumper is I would have thought the all navy jumper looks more like a Panther than a blue and white hooped jumper. If I were a South fan, I'd be pushing for an all navy jumper with a ferocious white panther's head on the chest.

Bizarrely enough Mrs ZZ noticed that today on the ABC. Haven't the Kangaroos gone back to being known as North Melbourne?

Well, panthers are black .... but, yes, all navy blue is closer than stripes. However, since when is the guernsey design meant to actually look like the animal/mascot! Magpies aren't black and white stripes and tigers don't have one yellow sash ;)

In fact, it seems "panther" is a general term that could cover a few species of big cat with the most likely candidate actually a black leopard (thanks to internet research)

Can't believe South would do something like this when they have a huge opportunity to take advantage of the "South" of Adelaide. The old-style panther-head logo would look good on the front of their guernsey, but so too does the SA.
From an Eagles supporters' point of view, the worst thing about the merger is that we only really have one term "Eagles", to use in "pub-talk" and cheering at the footy (by the time you get out carn Woodville-West Torrens, Centrals would have kicked another goal against us) etc etc, rather than a club name and a nickname.

Not happy about it. Members voted on it a few weeks back, and while I am yet to hear anybody say they actually prefer the changes, according to the club the members were "over whelming" in their support for the change.

Change for the sake of change..

It'd be fair if they had moved to Modbury or something just as odd, but at least they're in the south, so it would make sense to still be South Adelaide. Sounds to me like one overbearing person getting their way.

Pet hate: Teams that drop their locality in favour of a mascot.
Can understand the "Eagles" given Woodville-West Torrens is a gobful ... don't like the "Western" Bulldogs and hated the "Kangaroos".
Glad to see North Melbourne is back.
As has been noted, can't believe an "overwhelming" majority of South members have voted for this when one has yet to turn up on this thread.
If they'd changed their name to Noarlunga, fair enough ... but Panthers is absoulte garbage.

I had the same thoughts, if they MUST change, why not name themselves Noarlunga Panthers? I'm not fond of them just being known as Panthers, but then again I don't support that club. Just because they want to be known as Panthers, doesn't mean the rest of us can't still call them South :)

This seems to be a very silly decision by South Adelaide. If they were still based at Panther Park/Adelaide Oval, I could understand the dropping of 'South Adelaide' but they moved to Noarlunga to try and connect more with the outer southern community (ala Centrals) - in a way to emphasise the SOUTH in South Adelaide. To drop the South Adelaide in their name, you must question how serious they want to connect with the outer southern suburbs. IMO, it also makes a mockery of the SA on their jumper.

One question though - if South are hell bent on only being referred to as 'Panthers' why did they use the name 'South' on the scoreboard?

Not happy about it at all. The press release refers to the membership supporting it in an overwhelming majority. The survey was returned to the club by approx 240 members, of whom 65% were in favour. There were 1200 financial members last year.........
I'm afraid that if South supporters and members are averse to name change and rebranding -you had better get used to it, because this is only the start of it. Jumper change is next on the agenda at the next agm. Also rumoured, are renaming the grandstand and the oval to reflect the Southern suburbs a bit more.
Happy days.
