2009 State Game - SANFL vs WAFL in Perth

Postby Squawk » Sun Mar 15, 2009 10:41 pm

The 2009 State League match between the SANFL and the WAFL will be held in Perth on Saturday May 23. Apparently the final venue is yet to be determined but there has been some suggestion it could be at Medibank Stadium in Leederville or at Fremantle Oval.

Is anyone thinking of going? I'm toying with the idea - does anyone know if the SANFL will coordinate a supporters trip of sorts with a package of flights and acommodation etc?

It's only 2 months away.....

I think you will find it will be at Medibank Oval in Leederville guys...

A few of us from LifeFM are heading over, not likely to be calling the game for SA listeners but possibly 6RPH over there will be doing the game and so I assume you will be able to pick it up through 5RPH here. Really looking forward to it, never been to Perth before.

Taking the missus over as well for a bit of a holiday before our wedding, using Mr Rudd's bonus money to finance it all :D

Although they're having trouble getting a straight answer on venue over in WA,
this post from 'SeniorSeagull' on WAFootyGoss seems to back you up Phil.

"SABRE, it’s almost a certainty that it will be at Leedervill oval, as the WAFL see’s it as their 2nd ground after Subi oval. Lots of good suburban grounds it could be at, but it will be at Leedervill. We don’t get anywhere near the crowds you get in the SANFL (ave around 2000 a game at best) so an optimistic estimate would be 5-7000 at the state game which would be much better at the smaller Leederville oval than at the concrete echo chamber that is Subi oval.
The expectation here is that SA will win comfortably due to your comp being so much stronger. Our clubs have struggled along with an official salary cap of $175k, increased to $200 this year, you blokes are up around $400k?."

Another wag over there says...."you're only coming over because you miss Jars so much"

Semi Related;

If 6RPH (990) are doing the state game, you would assume as a minimum 5RPH would take the coverage, even if one of the station does not send a team over.

Who's gonna ask them?

You'd be looking at a figure of at least $450 for flights and accomodation for two nights.

Still no news at our end, but surely to be at Leederville ... especially if the WAFL can find a way of giving Subiaco FC a free rein on making even more dosh.

WAFL State Squad Announced
Thursday, 16 April 2009 13:51
AFTER careful deliberation from the West Australian Football League’s State Team selectors, an initial squad of 29 has been named to prepare for this season’s State clash with South Australia.

A strong squad spearheaded by Bernie Naylor Medallist Brad Smith and former AFL goal-sneak Jeff Farmer will host the Croweaters at Medibank Stadium on May 23, with the game set to bounce down at 12.40pm.

The squad has been selected by WA coach Scott Watters (Subiaco), assisted by fellow league coaches Tony Micale (East Perth), Chris Waterman (Peel) and Shane Woewodin (East Fremantle).

Micale will also act as backline coach, Waterman forward line coach and Woewodin will focus on the midfield as WA aims to restore State pride against the South Australians, who won the last State encounter by 17 points at Adelaide Oval three years ago.

The squad also includes former AFL players Ross Young, Matthew Moody and Matthew Ferguson from Perth Football Club, Danny Chartres from Peel, Subiaco’s Phil Read and South Fremantle’s Jaymie Graham.

West Coast rookie Adam Cockie has been named again after a strong performance for the State side last season when they defeated Queensland in Townsville 24.20 (164) to 14.7 (91).

2009 WAFL STATE SQUAD:

Claremont - Chad Jones, Ian Richardson, James Thomson
East Fremantle - Kyle Hardingham, Daniel Dalby, Anthony Kyanga
East Perth - Craig Wulff
Peel Thunder- Simon Rosa, Daniel Haines, Danny Chartres, Kain Robins
Perth - Ross Young, Scott Siekierka, Matthew Moody, Aaron Zucconi, Matthew Ferguson, Jarryd Kayler-Thompson
South Fremantle - Jeff Farmer, Jaymie Graham
Subiaco - Adam Cockie, Shaun Hildebrandt, Phil Read, Brad Smith, Ben Keevers
Swan Districts - Lewis Jetta, Brett Wolfenden, Brett Robinson
West Perth - Jason Salecic, Andrew Strijk

A few handy players in the WA side there and of course a bit of AFL experience to boot...

The SANFL web site said that South Australian coach Darel Hart will announce his initial 30 man squad on the 28th of April so there are a couple more rounds for players to impress selectors.

I know of at least 5 or 6 guys heading over (including myself) but I guess it something we will just have to wait and see when we get a better idea of numbers. Would be good to have one for the boys, I was involved in the banner for last years game and it was good fun and great to meet fellow forumites.
