Soccer...even if off topic

Postby SDK » Mon Mar 02, 2009 6:36 pm

I know this is totally inappropriate but.....
After the weekend's soccer in the A League why would anyone bother to follow such a farcical game as that ?
The Greg Legonas impersonation in the world cup by the Italian Academy Award winner !
No wonder the fans riot, shoot each other, throw darts into police officers eyes and hang the umpire....mmmmm maybe hanging the umpire is not so bad...hahahaha.
Im so thankfull to be able to watch such a great game....SANFL.....not AFL with their latest rolling zones BS.
Even had that xxxx Brian Gorjan telling us how AFL is more and more like basketball...as if we did not know that already !

I'm with you to a degree, but a lot of people love soccer more than life itself. It's a mystery to me, but it's everyone's right to choose.

I like highlights reels of soccer, but cannot watch an entire game. I need more scoring .. that's just me.

exactly it's all just opinions.
Im a massive soccer fan and player and find if you watch soccer and then switch the t.v straight over to aussie rules, the aussies rules just looks scrappy, disorganised, no flow. Also 0-0 draws are exciting at least the game has come down to the last second, where at any moment either team could win it. IMHO better than watching an Aussie Rules game where a team is up by 30+ points at three quarter time.

Just think how many games last season of the team you support finished with a margin of less than three goals, or weren't over at 3/4 time, it would be minimal.

But it is all just opinions.

Yes is all a matter of opinion but soccer is too dependent on luck.
10 unlucky misses loses to 1 lucky shot.
When that Italian ballerina went down like a dying swan in the world cup I think 90% of non soccer enthusists...like me....thought bugger this game.

The day the SANFL league premier is decided by a penalty shoot-out is the day I give it away.

I thoroughly enjoy both codes.

There are sports I don't enjoy, yet can't see the point in starting a thread and pointing out the reasons why.

If you don't like it, don't watch. No-one is forcing you to watch.

Considering Soccer is the biggest game in the world, I hardly think it's in trouble......

Good point there Dutchy.

One thing that they do in Soccer is give a yellow card for a player "diving". I'd like to see this employed in footy for when a player "acts" for a free and its totally obvious (see law for delibrate out of bounds), then its a free against him. That will stop players throwing their arms back to get the umps attention, and free kicks are earnt instead of conned.

Having said that I'm somewhat disenchanted with the A-League since Sat night, and I'm not the only one. So thats good for Aussie Rules.

Although I played Soccer and Hockey at school and enjoyed playing them as games, I don't find either as satisfying to watch as Aussie rules.
I always assumed the off field violence at Soccer was caused by the frustration of watching a game where nothing much happens, and, often, nobody wins.

Hmm Interesting point HBT ... I don't think they hand out enough Yellow cards in Soccer for diving, needs to happen far more often - Yet I'm vehemently opposed to the same system in Oz Rules footy.

The difference is that in soccer/football, a penalty for diving can affect the match result right there and then, as it only takes one goal to win a match, and it could also result in the loss of a player without replacement which is a bit different to Oz Rules (where I think the Umps have enough to watch out for, let alone carding players).

Oz Rules has it's own identity and I'd really hate to see further rule changes that include influences of other codes.

Being a pom, i love soccer, and follow my team all over. But personally, I think SANFL is often moe exciting. I love both codes but both have their cheats. It's just that in soccer one act of cheating can change the whole game.

I also agree, that when you are on the end of a 40 point belting, it cold be disheartening, but as North proved in 2007 against Sturt and the Eagles, it is possible to overturn a 50 point deficit, and when that happens there is nothing like it for excitement. Don't forget, when you are 4 - 0 down at hlf time, there is no more chance of getting up for a win then there is when you are 50 points down in SANFL.

Each to their own though, but why is this topic on the SANFL board in the 1st place ????

I think if there are two good teams playing soccer can be good to watch. I loved indoor soccer at school and represented my school. I am currently addicted to FIFA 09 on PS3.

But if the teams are crap then its boring as. No disrespect to the W-League (Womens A-League) but watching that on ABC (I think) isnt very exciting. Its just way to slow. Even the A-League is really slow. Unless theres world class players doing all their fancy footwork and stuff i just find it boring. I like all the soccer shows that are on SBS all Sunday arvo, that highlight the week in world soccer. You get to see whats going on around the world. I dont have Foxtel so thats the only chance I get.

But Aussie Rules Football is in a league of its own. People say you need more skill to play soccer. I think Aussie Rules is one of the most demanding sport skills wise. To be able to kick accurately, handball, mark, tackle, bump, have awareness, be able to read the ball, read the bounce, and stay calm under emense pressure takes a lot of work.

I hear that a new rule will be introduced by the AFL in that 'bad sportsmanship' will be punishable by free kick!

You could argue that 'acting' for a free is bad sportsmanship. Will we see in enforced?

+1

I love my soccer, but grew up following the Redlegs as the old NSL was a basketcase:(
When I moved to Melbourne I became an expat Sa-lian..and the place to socialise with other expats was at Bily Bells pub in South Melbourne when Crows games were being televised..I became a Crows man in this way, bit of state pride in Victoria saw to that!
I never lost my love for soccer, I was at the heartbreaking draw with Iran at the MCG in 97, First time I cried like a little baby at a sporting event:(:(:(:(
The things that make Aussie Rules a great sport are gradually being ruined by the AFL Commission, at precisely the time soccer got its act together. I found tha the only ARF I could watch was the tradfitional rough and tumble of SANFL, so I am a member of both MNorwood and Adelaide United plus I make many trips O/S to watch the socceroos as part of the Green&Gold Army, I love both sports for different reasons, and the recent responses of the AFL only show fear at the potential for soccer's growth in this country...I cant wait to tell the truth, I'd love to see Australiacompete at the highest level for the World Cup in a sport played by more than just 50 countries!
C'mon you Reds....Adelaide United = its just like watching Brasil!!!

I love both footy[NOT the V/AFL!] and soccer, is that even allowed??;)

That's probably got something to do with alot of the riots overseas. I just don't see the point in people taking sport seriously. If you lose, congratulate the winner and get on with it. After all, it's just a game!! Unless you're getting paid 100s of 1000s of dollars to play it....lucky bastards!

God I hope it isn't so ... The argument of acting for a free is only a recent argument, it's been part of the game since Adam was a boy ... I don't think there would be one footballer alive from any grade of any competition that could say they hadn't play-acted for a free somewhere along the line.
