I have had a number of discussions about this and i still strongly belive that he is a better forward than backman. You have to kick goals to win gams and he is a 2 time Ken Farmer medalist??

I think you will find that with the recruitment of key defender Justin Hardy from Tasmania and Daniel Havelberg back from injury, having proven his versatility playing well at CHB, Schelly will pretty much spend the whole year in the forward lines. A lot of it will depend on his groin as well, we know he carried it through last years finals and I think the club is keen to take a more cautious approach by playing him up forward more.

Although a good defender, and with CDFC's recruiting, Hav coming back from injury, surely Roy can afford to allow Schelly back up forward. Playing there all season, 50 goals is almost a certainty barring injury....
GO WELL- GO SCHELL!!!!

Ideally he is IMO best used as a forward as he takes the oppositions best defender every time. Saying that he has been very good at CHB, almost as good as Ferguson ;) , when used down there, more out of necessity IMO.

He is a gun at either end, but I much prefer to see him in the back half when playing against my team.

I think he's a great player either end but is definately a forward.
Mind you I think playing him at CHB keeps him physically and mentally a bit fresher and he might get a bit stale if down forward.
I know he used to get the yips in front of goals quite often which was his only downfall.
Top bloke too, enjoyed a drink with him occasionally, very nice guy sober, and very funny guy when a few are under the belt! :D

Up forward for me. He straightens the side up when he plays in attack. He is also a very hard worker when he doesn't have the ball, which makes running out of defence hard for opposition sides.

Roy Laird has said numerous times in the messenger that in 2009 he wants to play Schell and Havelberg in the forward line for the whole year. Alot of that will depend on how well new recruit Justin Hardy performs.

I also think Heath Lawry will make an impact as a defender this season, he has shed the kilos and performing personal bests on the track, his kicking out of defence will be a massive asset especially on the smaller grounds such as unley, parade and the bay.

Forward or back, just so long as he's on the park!

No doubt one of the best forwards in the comp, but depends on the needs of the team. We have other key forward options so his marking down back can be a real worry for the opposition. But his best possie is definitely up forward.

answering that question the obvious answer is both as he is a class act on the football field at both ends of the ground, i also believe he is a class act off the ground

He is a FULL FORWARD.

Laird likes to complicate things.....

It makes for a better team.....

SANFL is too easy for this great man....

And posibly too easy for this great club....
