MEDIA RELEASE
Tuesday, 17th February 2009
CAPTAIN COURAGEOUS TO LEAD HIS STREAK

The Glenelg Football Club’s Senior Player Leadership Group for 2009 was announced to the
playing group on Friday 13th February prior to the Club’s first internal trial at Max Basheer
Reserve, as voted by the Senior Playing group earlier in the week.
Ben Mules will again lead the charge in 2009 in his fourth year as Captain of the Tigers. He is
supported by Ben Kane as Vice Captain and Brett Backwell to re-assume the Deputy Vice
Captain role for a third consecutive year with Ty Allen, Luke Panozzo and Trevor Cranston –
new to the leadership role – rounding out the 2009 group.
“Trevor is an inspirational player and his mature and calm nature and his willingness to help
other players make him a natural leader.
“The development of leadership skills throughout the whole playing group has been a
significant factor in evolving a culture at Glenelg which is conducive to winning. Through their
commitment to a leadership program, every Glenelg player understands that he has
leadership responsibilities.” Senior Coach Mark Mickan stated.
Adam Fisher, who governed the role of Vice Captain for three consecutive years from 2006 to
2008 made the decision not to be considered for the 2009 leadership group due to work
commitments and his need to focus on maintaining his body to play at the high standard that
he sets himself. Adams natural ability and willingness to contribute as a leader remains an
asset to the group.
“The 2008 leadership group of Ben Mules (captain), Adam Fisher (vice captain), Brett
Backwell (deputy vice captain), Ben Kane and Matthew Bode are to be commended on the
way they went about their work.” Mickan concluded.
The group has been extended to six members this season due to the increase number of
players training with the senior group as a result of the SANFL’s decision to move to an Under
18 and Under 16 junior structure.
A second internal trial will be played this Friday, 20th February from 6pm at Max Basheer
Reserve. The first external trial match is against Norwood on Friday 27th February under
lights at Coopers Stadium. The leadership group, on behalf of the senior playing list
encourage everyone to attend and support the Bays in the exciting lead-up to what promises
to be a thrilling 2009 SANFL season.

That's pretty impressive from a Ben Kane point of view...

In the short period of time he has been at The Bay he has won a B&F in his first year, played State Footy, played in the GF and now been appointed Vice Captain all in a couple of seasons.

A great effort from a quality player, clearly held in high regard by those in the know down at Gliderol Stadium. Well done Ben
