Messenger ExclusiveTHIS is the exciting Sturt footballer AFL premier Hawthorn wants to get its hands on - but can’t.
The Hawks are so keen they went as far as asking the AFL for special permission to accept a late draft nomination, but were rejected.

Pity for him that the AFL didn't allow a slight bend in the rules. It would've been a very exciting time for him only to be let down like that. Maybe next year he will nominate.

It is interesting thst Michael Coad was being touted as a last minute recruit to the Hawks, thanks largely to Rick Macgowan.
Coady has got talent, there is no doubt about that and fully fit, would be in the top 5 versatile players in the league.
I wonder though, if he happened to get onto the Hawks list, what Clarko's intentions were in regards to the position in which he would play.
One would think their forward line has enough power with Buddy Love, Roughead, Williams, Dew etc.
Maybe there is real worry about the fitness of Trent Croad for season 09 and they wanted him as a back up key defender ?
Coady could have ended up going over there and just play in the VFL all year with Box Hill Hawks, which I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted.

Might not have been what he would want, but would be worth the risk.

True, he would be worth the punt no doubt, is a good footballer and I reckon would go alright at an AFL club, just probably no room for him in the best 21 at Hawthron though. Yes, The Hawks were so keen on him they asked for permission from the AFL to draft him despite him not nominating but I just reckon they wanted him as back up for Trent Croad if his foot doesn't hold up.

That is crap, well it is not crap but why the AFL can not be flexible in this case I dont know.
All the clubs know who he is and it is not as if they tried to sneak an unknown 17 year old into the draft pool.
The AFL should get there and say ok, we will allow it but Hawthorn as a sponsor of his late nomination you must rookie list him. All other clubs will have a chance to grab him before the hawks have a selction so no big deal.
If he was clever he would have pleaded to the AFL that he did send in a nomination form. Basically from there he would have to sign a stat dec saying he sent it and the would let him into the draft pool.
