I believe that before you spend money renaming and repackaging a product you need to ensure that you have a saleable product.

Lets get a few wins on the board before we look at going down this track.

It's easy to market a winner.

Doesn't make sense. They're south and they're based south of Adelaide. Leave as is.

Try being West Perth. West of what?

Central Districts are named after the league they were formed from, its got nothing to do with location.

South Coast Panthers is a good idea IMHO as they're trying to relate to the whole Fleureiu Peninsula and create an affinity with the beach culture down there.

The club website (and everyone I have ever spokenwith about it) believe the name to have come from the agricultural and meterological definitions of the Northern area, being the Central District. The local association was formed later and was named after CDFC who were a patron of the association.

I should have said carnival, not league too.

Yet another ridiculous suggestion......

It would be interesting to see what might happen at South Adelaide if the club actually put its focus onto winning games rather than taking part in every single distraction that they can find. Maybe the club might do better to grow some courage and tell the SANFL to go and get Firetrucked next time they want to continually move the boundaires and push the club further south by proxy.

From that last link

"..... - Central District (derived from the agricultural and meterological definition of the Northern area) was to play its games at Elizabeth Oval (a neutral venue as far as the delegates were concerned). "

South Australia's central agricultural and meterological district seems pretty clearly defined here

Maybe South could change their name to Southern Central District? 8)

So the second oldest club in the league is going to change their name for 'marketing' reasons.

The tradition of the league is its greatest asset.

A stupid name change didnt help Footscray

I do not believe the club's official name ... ie South Adelaide Football Club Inc will change.

This name would be listed in the first section of the clubs official constitution.

To change that name would require a constitutional change ie at least a majority vote by members present at an AGM or Special GM. I cannot see that happening if it went to a vote.

On Saturday the SAFC gave notice of their AGM and the only constitutional change listed is not related to a name change.

However,

They may adpot "South Coast Panthers" as a trading name which requires no such direct membership vote.

This is what occured with the Western Bulldogs in the AFL. Officially the enity is still Footscray Football Club Inc, the Western Bulldogs being their trading name, ie this from wikipedia

Although the team officially trades under the name "Western Bulldogs", the initials "F.F.C." for Footscray Football Club, which still remains the club's official name, are placed on the back of the jumper immediately beneath the collar in small white capital letters.

As to whether this should happen ......

Personally it is critical for the future of the Panthers that they are adopted by the south coast community as their team. (Remember Central were born in Elizabeth, South just moved in).

The trick is to balance new links with the new community without alienating the current supporter base (that whilst small is the most loyal in the league).

This maybe a happy medium where
- a recognition of the South Coast region enhances the link between the team and their region.
- the blue & white and Panther nicknames remain
- it is still officially the South Adelaide Football Club Inc
- the "South" term is still retained in all promotion.

However simple name changes will not do the trick, the club (like many others in the SANFL) need to become much more proactive in developing a community presence in all that happens on the South Coast. Going back to play a game at Encounter Bay next Easter is a good start.

BTW
West Perth in the WAFL, have a much more difficult issue as they moved to Joondulup which is about 30km north of Perth. So far the club has resisted a name change although Joondulup does appear on the logo now.

South's zone does cover some inland areas does it not? Not to mention Kangaroo Island!

Are folk in these areas going to be alienated?
