The Sturt Football Club regrets to advise its members that Andrew Whiteman and Daniel Wicks have this week advised new club coach Luke Norman of their decision to retire from League Football forwith. The Club will be issuing a press release on Friday morning acknowledging the wonderful contribution of Andrew and Daniel to the Club and wish them both every sucess for the future.


'Nugget' Whiteman = my favourity sanfl footballer. Thanks bloke, it has been a privilege.

I wouldn't write Wicksy off yet this is the second time he has retired - I reckon he's got another one left in him yet.

As Mike Nunan used to say "announcing your retirement is self indulgent ... you don't retire you just stop playing".

Nunan never anounced HIS retirement - he just never played again - that is the ultimate of 'team'.

Well done to Whiteman especially, a player i have the upmost respect for, on a fantastic career. Wouldn't we all love on of him in our corner. Well done to Wicks as well a premiership player that i could never like, i think it is all wingmen i don't like nothing personal to Wicksy.

i wouldn't think it is all doom & gloom for sturt, remember they had a great reserves side & we heard about the great depth all year, they just need to make the next step & wasn't there 2 kids that played u/19's this year that played league in 2007.....i'd rather be in sturts shoes than south or westies

That's true Hammers. And, it should be added, champions all!
Last season we had a wealth of talent to call on when anyone was out for whatever reason, next year that wealth of talent will need to take a step up. This could be a good thing as it could provide some consistency to what's expected of the youngsters stepping up. How they handle the responsibility may be a telling factor.
If I could be a little "Sturt Peter like", (as he hasn't made an appearance yet) I could perhaps compare our situation to that of the Greek General who, in choosing his battlefield, chose to fight with the river at his back rather than on the open plain facing the river, because the idea that there was no escape would cause the warriors to fight even harder. Said general achieved a stunning victory against a much larger and formidable force than his own. Could the Blues of 2009 also be fighting under such circumstances without the luxury of all these retired champions?

Don't be surprised if he doesn't get drafted that Charlie Sharples decides to stay up North and play for teh NT team in teh QAFL. I'm sure the ex-NT Teal Cup representatve Stuart Totham is talking to Chrlie while he is up in Darwin playing for Darwin in the NTFL

Any news on Nelson as well? I had the feeling he was done, and with MacGowan leaving it might just sure up the thought that it's time to let the next generation through.

Sharples will probably get a rookie list spot somewhere, most likely one of the SA teams too I would have thought. Those guys are in high demand at the moment, and on a rookie spot he would cost very little for the crows and/or power were he to come good.

Didnt Sharples' form nose dive from the State game onwards ?????
I saw him late in the season and his form was ordinary at best.
