New coaching appointments at Centrals

Postby Big Phil » Thu Nov 06, 2008 11:28 pm

Don't panic, Roy Laird is still Centrals league coach, he's not heading off to the AFL or anything...

Although nothing official has been released by the club, I believe Centrals will be appointing long serving Under 19's coach Geoff Brown to take charge of the reserves for season 2009. Browny has been a long standing servant of the club and was successful in taking the Under 19's side to a Premiership back in 2003. He will take over from 2008 reserves coach and former league Premiership player Damien Hicks after he decided to step down from the role for next year.

Also, expect Grant Coffee, the former Bulldog goal kicking machine to be announced as the Under 18's coach for the new underage structure the SANFL will take up from season 2009 and beyond. As many would know, Coff has been doing commentary work for both 5RPH and ABC TV's coverage of the SANFL for the last few seasons. He has also been coaching his son's Under 14's side up at the Golden Grove Football Club as well as the Centrals Under 14's side that compete in the AAMI cup played throughout the duration of the SANFL League Finals.

Good luck to both gentleman in their new posts for season 2009, let's hope they have good seasons...

Grant Coffee has also been doing work for the past few years as a Talent Scout for West Coast Eagles along with Rod Boots here in SA. So he must know a thing or two about footy.

My understanding is that Browny will be part an assistant coach with the League team.

Grant Coffee was at my table on Friday night for the Centrals Premiership Dinner down at AAMI and he confirmed that he will be coaching the Under 18's in season 2009 and that Geoff Brown will in actual fact be coaching the reserves for Centrals in 09. So yes, that role also involves being an assistant coach to Roy Laird.

I was told by a club official on Friday night that Damian just want be able to find the time to committ to training and functions etc. His business interests are taking up more and more of his time so he decided to step down, giving Browny a well deserved opportunity.

Browny should do a good job, when i was playing colts for South Gawler he was the A Grade coach and made a point of coming and training with us at least once a week, very thorough in his approach and well respected by the players from what i hear.

I was his runner in the '03 under 19's premiership, a very deserving appointment. Never met anyone as passionate about his footy and Centrals as Browny.

The boys from the 5RPH Monday Sports Show interviewed one of their fellow employees, Mr Grant Coffee in regards to his announcement as the Under 18's coach out at Centrals. It was a good chat with one of my favourite all time players, well done boys and good luck GC...

Oh, come on redden whites, I can be a tad over complimentary when talking about former players of the club I support...

He did kick 13 in a game against Sturt one day and just under 300 league goals.
