Subiaco for the SANFL? Lunacy, I tell you!

It's not April 1, is it?
This was found on the Footygoss website home page ...

Has Subiaco outgrown the WAFL?

With the last 3 WAFL premiership flags adorning the walls at their Leederville club house and recognised as one of the financial powers of the WAFL has Subiaco got too big for the WAFL?

With a few other clubs struggling and even other financial heavy weights, South Fremantle & Swan Districts unable to unseat the Lions should Subi look East?

The SANFL competition is vibrant with large crowds, good media coverage and finances on par with the Lions, also they have 9 teams and a team from the West would be a good fit. The SANFL were actively courting a team to join their competition with the proposed NT club not up to the competition standard and the Tassie Devils opting to stay in the VFL before imploding altogether.

The move of Subi to SA would also let the WAFL revert back to an 8 team competition although Subi’s Reserves and Colts would still play in the WAFL competition. Would the board at Subi be brave enough for such a move? Would the WAFC let them? What would be the impact on the WAFL and WA footy in general?

Something for message boarders to ponder over the summer

My mail is that when the new Football Stadium is up and running and the 2 AFL sides move from Subiaco Oval then most of Subi's money will dry up. They apparently have a very lucrative deal with the WAFL and the 2 AFL Clubs re income from all the Corporate boxes which they signed years back being the original tenants of the ground. They won't get much if no-one plays there!

Maybe Barto or one of the other WA posters can confirm this?

Its always a point to ponder on re how many current SANFL sides could beat Subiaco at their home ground - would be interesting to see how a lower ranked SANFL side might go - probably not all that well I suspect! :?

Yep, the Subi Oval deal is one of their biggest sources of income.

Many outsiders would say, of course they have, their results on and off the field speak for themselves...

I don't think we have outgrown the SANFL, I just think we have set the benchmark at such a high level that other clubs haven't quite yet been able to catch up to us. I would love to see Centrals in the AFL but we all know it isn't going to happen so we are in the next best competition behind that, the SANFL.

I think this unbelievable run that Centrals has had is slowly going to peter out and we will start to see them come back down to the playing field, seeing as though the other clubs are somewhat lagging behind (for want of a better word) with the exception of Sturt in 02 and Eagles in 06 (but they just caught us on bad days)

I always think about how good (for Centrals only of course) it would have been if we had won the flag in 02 and 06. Imagine that, 9 in a row !!!

I think we should be in the AFL !!!
Nick off and merge with the Western Bulldogs then!
You may scrape up a competitive team between you there, or perhaps by taking over the Power??

Seriously, Centrals have done the SANFL a service by proving the other clubs have to become professional, and not treat the SANFL like a social club.
When this happens crowds will increase further.

Well it's actually the Western Bulldogs (or Footscray as it was then) that assisted us with our start in the SANFL, giving us jumpers and socks etc. so maybe we could repay them by merging with them and taking them to their first AFL premiership in a while.

Of course, we would require some selective recruitng (maybe Al Clarkson, Roy Laird and Rick Macgowan to share the coaching duties) and could probably do with a time machine to turn back the clock 5 or 6 years for the likes of the Gowans twins, Sladey, Buckets mackenzie etc.

Plus we will be entitled to concessions, all Centrals affiliated players to come to the club - Trav Varco, Alan Obst, Stewie Dew, Westhoff's x 2 etc etc. The only way ewe would take over the Power was if Peter Rhode and Chocco got the flick and Kris Grant and Roy Laird stepped straight in...

You're right though Pysber, we have set the tone for other clubs and if they want the success we have had, they will have to model themselves on us in some aspects, just as we famously did with Port Magpies in the 90's. Look at the results we have had since !!

turn the clock back 5 years and you'd have the Gowans, Sladey and Buckets playing SANFL in 2003 when they still weren't good enough for AFL.....

I'm pretty certain the writer of the piece wasn't really pushing for Subi to head east.
More just a case of thinking outside the square. Not a bad thing.
While the original suggestion probably won't get taken up, it will provoke debate, publicity (not a bad thing for the WAFL) and maybe open up some other possibilities.

Oh well, doesn't matter, it was only a bit of wishful thinking...

Who cares that they weren't good enough for AFL, I reckon they'd take their 25 odd premierships between then any day over playing AFL !!!

I think we can forget about teams crossing borders / leagues fulltime, but who likes
the idea of the SANFL premier & wooden spooner playing their WAFL counterparts
at the end of each season?
It could alternate between Adelaide Oval & WACA ground each year with revenue
going to the host league. The wooden spooners playing the curtain raiser to the
‘Premiers’ match.
It would certainly be a good barometer for current SA/WA league standards.
Soccer has ‘friendlies’ quite often, so why not us ?
Cheers,

beat me to it....
had CD entered a team in the AFL, & relied on the Gowans for their fortunes, they would be languishing lower than Melbourne on a bad hair day.

CD would be the logical choice if a 3rd SA based side was to enter, but I fear they would have a smaller supporter base than Port.

It would be interesting to see a match between the two premiers of the SANFL / WAFL held the week prior to the start of the season as an annual event. :D

It didn't matter what kind of day you could have had in 2002, you were always going to lose. Pay your dues now, there's a good lad.
