Was pleased to read the following in last weeks Southern Times Messenger

MESSENGER RECOGNISED

Messenger Community News has featured strongly in the 2008 News Awards .. the pre-eminant awards for journalism in News Ltd.

The Southern Times Messenger is one of four finalists in the Community Newspaper of the Year.

The judges said, "this is a little newspaper that thinks big - campaigning for jobs for auto-workers stranged by the closure of the Mitsubishi Factory, fighting for a rail like to its community, saving it's Blue Light teenagers disco and treating the local football premiership as bigger than the AFL Grand Final. .....

Reece Homfray is a finalist in the Sports Journalist of the Year Award, going up against the like of The Courier Mail's Mike Coleman and The Daily Telegraph pair of James Hopper and Josh Massoud.

The judges praised Homfray's ability to "turn the seemingly ordinary into a cracking read."

Living in the Southern Times area I have always been impressed with the depth of coverage of the Panthers and at the same time the SFL. Good luck to both with the awards.

I think it was Reece that wrote the article about Noal Keen's passing recently.

I was delighted to see that such emphasis had been placed on the life and times of Noal Keen, particularly with regards to not only his cricket playing and umpiring days, but the legacy he left on the cricket umpiring fraternity. KG was also nice enough to mention Noal Keen several times on the 5AA sports show, so credit to the media that did acknowledge the fine life Noal Keen led.

Having said that, the article could have been a hell of a lot better, but the fact that Noal Keen was remembered for his contribution to cricket in SA was a wonderful thing Reece did.

I'm encouraged that the Mail has, in the past two years, been placing a far greater emphasis on suburban and country footy through their annual Heartland of Heroes footy mag and other special features...

Any link to the Noal Keen article, TB?

I played a lot of cricket with Noal umpiring and knew him very well.
