SANFL UMPIRES IN FINALS

The interpretation of the rules may be queried today in both SANFL finals[as always]
BUT
The style of umpiring was very refreshing
To see players dive for the ball and not get pinged for holding the ball
To see ruckman rape each other and not get pinged for ticky touch infringements
To allow the game to flow instead of stop start bullshit soft frees.
To allow people to spoil opponents in the air instead of giving frees for touching them
AND
Most importantly to allow players to committ themselves is the highlight.

It was finals footy and very very well umpired

I only watched one quarter on TV but it was probably the best quarter of umpiring Ive seen all year (last qtr in Sturt v Central game), didn't notice they were there, great effort. Its good that they realise that they're NOT to be noticed unlike their AFL counterparts at time who seem to think everyone pays to see them and not the football.

Just as well you didn't see the first three quarters then........

Saw the 1st qtr, expecting chambo to get to 100. I almost got it after he booted no 98 and 99 from pretty soft and dubious frees. Thought Sturt had a good run of soft frees early.

The early game saw some soft ones given resulting in goals.

I must say though that it was the best I've seen in quite a while.

I was frustrated with the umpiring in our game (Sturt V Doggies). For 3 quarters there were a lot of soft frees paid. The frees count was very high. I especially hate it when a player sees a tackle coming and ducks their head and gets a "too high" free. If they had umpired all game like the last then I would have been happy.

Yep, last quarter was great umpiring, should have been like that the whole game.

Theron is as soft as his name sounds! Hopefully the umps carry on that last qtr form for the rest of the finals.

Chambers free kick ealry in the 3rd was a shocker, he ducked straight into it, apart from that I thought they were good

Thought the umpiring in the first quarter of the Legs/Port game was as good as I can remember seeing, they just let it go so much it made for a cracking contest ... A few soft free's came into the game as it progresssed, but in the main I thought it was good.

This time of the year always begs the question, why don't the umps let it go as much during the course of the season?

Agreed.

But I thought the standard, consistency and overall performance was bloody good.

The boundary umpires in the scoreboard pocket made 2 obvious guesses from 60metres away, one costing Trotter an almost certain goal. Thought the white maggots would have stopped play when the stretcher came out though! :?
