Advertiser coverage of the finals

Postby Mr Fuller » Sat Sep 13, 2008 1:59 pm

I don't live in Adelaide so not sure what the coverage has been like but hopefully this year will be different from the past couple of years. Here is a couple of reasons

1. Crows and Power have been knocked out early in the finals - no competing interests
2. The return of Norwood, Port and Glenelg and the resurgence of Sturt (will balance lack of interest in Centrals)
3. Chambers kicking for 100 goals + publicity involved with telling people to not invade the ground (yeah right!)
4. A general increase in interest in the SANFL this year with crowd figures up throughout the season.

The Advertiser in the past has given maybe 1 full page at at the back of the sports page. Not good enough! We are an aussie rules state and now the crows/power are out who gives a fu*k what happens between the rest of the AFL teams.

This year deserves so much better and I hope the idiots at the Advertiser respond accordingly.

Agreed it has been very good.

Hooray for Advertiser's SANFL coverage!
Boo for the new masthead! What were they thinking??? Looks like the Messenger now.

Agreed it was great coverage today, I hope they keep it up especially in the season proper 2009.

Our local guardian Messenger has been fantastic in its promotion of teh bays.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Is it good coverage this week or just improved coverage on the usual crap coverage?
Perhaps if we get used to rubbish when its improved we think its good?

This is actually the first Finals Series since 2000 where both the Crows and Power are out of the AFL finals race. That alone would boost the coverage as the Advertiser.

The media have run out of footy news with no Port or Crows in the finals.
Suddenly there are 2,3 and 4 pages of SANFL discussion!
And imagine my surprise when I saw that most TV stations led their sports bulletins with the news that Jarman had gone from the role as coach of NAFC (on the night it happened).
5AA even had (a second interview) with Jars today after one just a day or two ago, and Leigh Whicker got about 12-15 minutes of time on 5AA this afternoon as well!

I'm not holding my breath that this will last beyond this season (or more correctly, this finals season) tho - unfortunately.

According to Zac Millbank, Trevor Hill has been "a devoted Redlegs fan all his life", i wonder what North and Torrens would think of that given the time he played at those clubs

I do realise he barracked for Norwood as a kid, but to say he's been a fan "all his life" doesn't quite look right to me.

I was over in Adelaide last week for work and noted that - Jars leading the 9 News Sport. PLUS 5 pages or so of SANFL stuff in the Tiser, excellent!

Would NEVER see that over here with the VFL. Keep the SANFL as it is IMHO!
(maybe add a 10th team from somewhere - I noticed that a fair few clubs are pretty close together - Port/Eagles/West for example)

I can assure you he played enough good footy against Norwood over the years to dispel any thoughts of barracking for Norwood on the day :)
