Draft Rewards

This post is based from a West Adelaide supporters view

In the 2008 draft, Bottom side for 4 years , West Adelaide could lose anything up to 7 or 8 players, hopefully 4 or 5 but it could be at the higher end.

Players who could be drafted include (All have been closely looked at or spoken to)
1 Hartlett (Draft Camp)
2 Martin (Draft Camp)
3 Stanley (Draft Camp)
4 Slattery (Draft Camp)
5 Webb
6 S Blesing (State Screening)
7 Nichols
8 Silverlock (Still an U/17 but can the Gold Coast grab U/17s this year?????)
9 Nathan Brown
10 S Morris
11 D Sukkel

SO MY POINT
Yes West Adelaide will get financial gains for any lads drafted but how does that help West Adelaide re-build their list so they can be a competitive club, we currently are not FACT. This is not and wont be the last time we get raped and pillaged by AFL clubs. Footnote : North Adelaide who have been crying out for a Ruckman of quality, and now have potentially found one in Big Dodman could lose him after a few games, so this is just not about West Adelaide

So I ask the question (What is the SANFL going to do about it??????)

Potential answers
1 Allow a club for each player drafted $15,000 a year for two years additional salary cap dollars, this would allow the club to recruit a replacement of hopefully similar ability to where the player is now at ability wise
2 Allow a club for each two players drafted and additional priority pick in the states mini draft.

This is not a bitch from a supporter who loves wooden spoons but an ask of the SANFL of a little bit more fairness.

Gives your positive and negative thoughts

Or you could have an U/19s team and develop the youngster who aren't quite good enough for AFL but need more time to work on their skills to get them up to SANFL league Football standard...

Serious question I remember watching ABC2 in 2006 and all these young kids playing for Westies. not all got drafted are those that didn't make still at your club?

This is why four clubs fought so hard to keep the 19s, your good your SANFL league players take more time to develop invest time in them now your reap the rewards tomorrow.

Ty Allan, Mark Ruwuldt, Brad Sugars Luke Panozzo, Ben Mules all players that took time to develop but the hard work is starting to pay off now. At the same time players like John Hinge, Josh Kruger, MArk Austin, Bryce Gibbs, Josh Willoughby etc were getting drafted
.
SANFL clubs get adequately rewarded for draft picks why do we need any more help for not developing and rewarding the next level of player...

In other words why should the clubs that invest in league palyer development be punished (through losing mini draft picks) for clubs that rely on Victorian hack recruits?

Not sure of some of the names on your list being draft potential (Nathan Brown??) but that's beside the point, I think your point about additional Cap space for replacement is quite a good suggestion.

At the end of the day however, all clubs have to contend with the same possible scenario ... As North (for example) became resurgent, they lost players to the Draft too but had the ability to replace most of them well at a senior level.

There is a very good kid, same name U/19s played ressies and nearly played League Nathan Brown, not the old boot at westies
with the same name that came back from Melbourne or the Nathan Brown at collingwood or Richmond

LOL Topsy, there are quality Victorian recruits like the ones you mentioned as well as James Allen, Josh Thurgood, Luke McCabe, Ben Haynes etc and then there are the ones clubs recruit from Western metro leagues and poor VFL players (i.e. hacks) who take the places of good young local lads who miss out on reserves spots (development) and then go off to play country and metro footy...

Is about Quality not Quantity of recruits

TM, dash's excellent post raises a question well worth debating and deserves better than a 'holier than thou' lecture response.

Yep agreed but please tell me the kids Rehn and Weed played in 2005 and 2006 how many are still there (those that weren't drafted)? How many got disenchanted when Phillips came in with 8-9 "recruits" from the western league of Melbourne.

Call it houlier than thou call it what you want - the good SANFL league palyers take longer to develop which is why you need an U/19s competition. it gives the 20 and 21 yo time to develop in the reserves. Once they have 50 odd senior games under their belt (ressies and 1s) thats when they start playing good league footy

DID NORTHS
Not a Norths supporter but of my head a couple from the last 2 years
1 Wundtke (They would have loved to have him up forward this year, leaving Stewart to develop as a ruck / forward)
2 M Campbell (Have missed and never replaced his pace)
3 S Edwards (His pace as with M Campbell can never be replaced)
4 N Gill (like wundtke another full time forward and not a floater between the two leagues)

While Luke McCabe is a quality footballer, he is not a Victorian as you mentioned above. He is from Centrals Under Age sides originally, before going to Hawthorn and hails from Hamley Bridge in the Adelaide Plains League.

The Nathan Brown being spoken of here comes from Loxton.

And believe it or not, there's another Nathan Brown running around in Riverland junior football as well!

Okay insert one of your quality Victorian recruits and add Dave Trotter to the mix as well.

Central wishes they had Trotter playing for them. I know I'd have him down the Bay.

I reckon they did, but North fans would be able to provide better info than I can ... I reckon their results/form this year had less to do with their list (portion still) and more to do with attitude and off-field conflict.

They certainly offered him more money but he was more impressed with Norwood's presentation to him. Allegedly.

Simple solution is to get rid of the salary cap.

Interesting list of names. Probably end up losing 4 players in the draft and rookie draft. The others although they would have been looked at one would think that they will fall just short.

As for your potential answer I like your thinking but not agreeing 100%.

This state should expect to lose a dozen players to the draft each year so each club should expect tolose their best kid (doesn't always work that way) and also a fair chance of losing the nex one. So for the first 2 the club should say thanks for the money we will enjoy their careers and have open arms for them when they wish to return.

However If they lose more than 2, for each player in addition to that I agree with the extra salary cap for the 2 years or maybe even 3 years.

Hmm...if the Bays had Gerrard in their corner, I'd be in agreeance...nup, keep the cap. Unless Dick Pratt is a Bays fan...
