This week's Star Search Award?

I'm looking forward to this week's announcement of the Star Search Award and no-one will be surprised that I hope the excellent judges of this award were at marvellous Broadspectrum Oval today to watch young Matthew Martin.

Now I have been accused in some quarters of 'pushing' West Adelaide players on this Forum, most notably Ryan Ferguson for the best CHB in the league. Uncharitable of my fellow posters, if you ask me, but perhaps they have a point about me being just a little biased.

Casting all bias aside, (well, nearly all) I watched Matthew Martin in defence for West Adelaide today. An 18 year old veteran of about 13 games, his opponent was Luke Cowan, a premiership player, playing as a key forward in a dominant team.

Matthew was great. He's been getting better for weeks, since Daniel Schell got him at Elizabeth earlier this year. His rebound was terrific and he managed to get the better of Luke in several one-on-one battles during the day.

Matthew was unlucky not to be last week's winner and I humbly submit that it would be a total travesty if he wasn't recognised this week.

However, I have faith in the judges, so I look forward to this week's announcement.

Unfortunately for the Bloods, but fortunately for Matty, I'm sure plenty of AFL scouts would have agreed with me today.

After seeing the Eagles v Norwood game I wouldn't be surprised if Chris Hall from the Eagles were nominated or even Nathan Daniel he had his best game for the club and he is very clean with his disposal both hand and foot.

Hall has been nominated already, but Daniel could be in with a chance.

If nominated already can't you be nominated again. I was unsure of the rules.

Nah, it's the same rules as the AFL equivalent.

fair enough. Nathan Daniel it is then. Like I said thought it was easily his best game for the club. Getting better and better in each game he plays.

Agreed R&B i though Matty Martin was fantastic yesterday. He is slowly learning the craft and has come a long way since his lesson from Daniel Schell.

Proof that someone reads this site...

R&B - Martin owes you a beer.

Matthew Martin from the West Adelaide Football Club has been named the Round 22 Coca-Cola Star Search Award nominee.

The 18-year-old defender debuted at League level in Round 5 this year.

He recorded seven kicks, seven handballs and seven marks against Central District last week.

Martin is West’s fourth Coca-Cola Star Search nominee for season 2008.

Introduced last season, the Coca-Cola Star Search Award recognises the talented youngsters making their mark in League ranks.

To be eligible for the Award, nominees are required to meet the following criteria:

· players must have played no more than eight State League games at the start of the 2008 season

· players must be aged 21 or under at January 1, 2008

· AFL rookies are eligible for the award unless promoted to the senior list of their AFL club

· Players who are suspended by the tribunal during the 2008 season are ineligible to win the award

Following each round of the home and away season, each competing club nominates one eligible player from their team.

A review panel then selects one player as the Coca-Cola Star Search Award nominee.

The review panel consists of:

Glen Rosser (General Manager – State League Competition)

David Hutton (General Manager – Game Development)

Daniel Thomas (SANFL Football Services Manager)

Brenton Phillips (SANFL Talent Manager)

On the completion of the minor round, one of the 23 nominees will be chosen by the review panel as the 2008 Coca-Cola Star Search Award winner. The award carries a winner’s purse of $2000.

The Coca-Cola Star Search Award winner will be presented the award at the Magarey Medal Presentation Dinner.

Thanks for that geat news, TB.

Now I'm a bit sensitive about such matters, but I hope you don't mind me starting up a new topic for this one, bearing in mind the reprimand I got from JAS on the Ben Speight topic :D

All I can say is that I congratulate the selection panel for this on their undoubted wisdom in agreeing with me.

All I need now is to lock in the Team of the Year Centre Half bACK :D
