The 18-year-old midfielder chalked up seven kicks, nine handballs, four marks and four tackles during last week’s 12-point win over West Adelaide.

The former Modbury High student also represented South Australia in the Under 18 National Championships in July.

Speight is Norwood’s third Coca-Cola Star Search nominee for season 2008.

Congratulations to Ben, well done...

Congratulations to Ben, who looks a good player.

It must have been a bit close this week, as I thought Matthew Martin's game on Taylor Walker was excellent and his form in the past two weeks has been very good.

I agree about it being a close call as to who got the nomination this week. I trust that Ben is a worthy nominee and I'm sure as R&B says, Matty Martin played a good game (he has been impressive in the games I've seen him and he is a big boy) and is unlucky not be nominated himself.

I saw young Crows Rookie James Moss play about his 6th league game for the Dogs at Noralunga on Saturday and the 18 year old former Junior State Cricketer was super impressive playing off half back and up on the wing.

He showed poise and skill beyond his age and a couple of times, courageously backed back into packs to take strong marks without knowing what was coming. He is a talented sportsperson and a footballer with a talent for which Crows fans can look forward to seeing a future star.

Even though Mossy is a Crows Rookie, as with the Eagles Jared Petrenko (before being elevated to Adelaide's senior list) players that are AFL rookie listed are eligible to be nominated for the Coke Rising Star Award.

Once again, well done to Ben Speight from Norwood, well deserved no doubt. I guess now Mossey and Matty Martin have 2 more games to sneak in their nominations, good luck boys...

Don't forget Ferguson who is possibly the best player to have ever played the game. Ever.

Good to see that TigerBoss and EVCRT know their footy :D

I'll keep pushing the Bloods, but with good reason. Matthew Martin would well deserve a Star Search nomination.

As for Westies youngsters, there are 13 SA players invited to the draft camp, I believe.

Of those 13, FOUR are from the Bloods:

Hamish Hartlett, Tyson Slattery, Rhys Stanley and.........

Matthew Martin :D

You're probably right...that's why I'm a keyboard warrior on here.

PS - I like salami. It's good with cheese and tomato.

Hooray for R&B...best bloke the WAFC could have in its corner...

TB, I'm surprised I beat you to asking whether or not Ben is related to Fijian coup leader George Speight.

I'm looking forward to this week's announcement of the Star Search Award and no-one will be surprised that I hope the excellent judges of this award were at marvellous Broadspectrum Oval today to watch young Matthew Martin.

Now I have been accused in some quarters of 'pushing' West Adelaide players on this Forum, most notably Ryan Ferguson for the best CHB in the league. Uncharitable of my fellow posters, if you ask me, but perhaps they have a point about me being just a little biased.

Casting all bias aside, (well, nearly all) I watched Matthew Martin in defence for West Adelaide today. An 18 year old veteran of about 13 games, his opponent was Luke Cowan, a very good player - a premiership player, playing as a key forward in a dominant team.

Matthew was great. He's been getting better for weeks, since Daniel Schell got him at Elizabeth earlier this year. His rebound was terrific and he managed to get the better of Luke in several one-on-one battles during the day.

Matthew was unlucky not to be last week's winner and I humbly submit that it would be a total travesty if he wasn't recognised this week.

However, I have faith in the judges, so I look forward to this week's announcement.

Unfortunately for the Bloods, but fortunately for Matty, I'm sure plenty of AFL scouts would have agreed with me today.

Maybe you ought to start a new thread about him...afterall this one was supposed to be used to congratulate Ben on his award. Otherwise it might start to look like you're trying to hijack it.

A bit pedantic to say the least, JAS.

This is totally in context with the flow of last week's discussion.

On the other hand, if we stick to that rule, we'll have a hundred new threads each day.

As for Ben, my first post on this congratulated him as a worthy winner and he's a fine young player.

Yes, when it comes to the Star Search Awards I am 'pedantic'...regardless of the team involved.

It's one chance for these lads have their moment of glory and get to be in the spotlight for a week...the player/club/round are named in the thread title and I think, in these cases, that is the topic that should be kept to. Your previous post is about a different player from a different club in a different round therefore imo it should be in a different thread. Either a new thread about the Award in general or a thread specifically about this weeks award but that does not mean there would be 'hundreds' of new threads each day.

JAS

JAS, I bow to your judgement on this and will remove my contribution to a separate thread and feel duly chastened

However, I feel duty bound to point out that Topsy has not assisted your argument by then quoting me and denigrating another player entirely :D

Yeah, you're right Topsy...

I think a better description of Luke Cowan is something like...

Luke Cowan - at his best, a good 3 time premiership player...

How many of those do the Redlegs have mate
