"North Adelaide captain Darryl Wintle has announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2008 season.

As reported on the North Adelaide Football Club website, Wintle told his teammates on Monday that this season would be his last, conceding the regular doctor and physio appointments needed to prepare his body ahead of each game had taken their toll.

A veteran of 14 seasons with the Roosters, he has led North since 2002 and is currently the League’s longest-serving captain.

Affectionately known as ‘Tubs’, he represented the State in 2004 and 2006, was named Best Finals Player in 2005 and also played three AFL games with Adelaide Football Club.

Coach Andrew Jarman said Wintle epitomised the North Adelaide Football Club.

“Darryl has been an inspirational leader for the group, they love him, and we are proud to say he has become more than a captain, he has become a good friend to all.”

The SANFL congratulates Wintle on his stellar career and acknowledges his significant contribution to League football."

I wouldn't at all be suprised to see him in some sort of coaching role at SANFL level in the next couple of years.

Maybe Jars can have him as one of his assistants after he signs a new 10 year deal...

Great career, loved watchin him play. Body just couldn't hold up. Gutsy, not flashy but really skillful.

Won't say no to him out at Broadies.

14 seasons in the SANFL is a pretty decent effort.

Shirtfront I know Im being a bit pedantic on things like this, but what constitutes a GREAT career ?

I think Wintle has been a TOP clubman and well respected but
1. Did he play 200+ games ?
2. Did he play in a Premiership ?
3. Did he win a club Best and Fairest ?
- The answers to all the above is NO and and the same answer is given to the question of him being a playing Club great !!!!!!!!!!!

body didn't quite allow it- how many games did he miss through injury? Didn't he do his knee?

he was a great leader of the club- end of story. He was one of the more respected players in the SANFL- a player's player. I would think respect from his peers means more to him than what you say...

spot on , but apart from that, a great club man and all round great guy, such a pity we never saw the brilliance of this guy due to injuries, hope he leaves his last game at Prospect this week in grand style

Does anyone know if Daryl works for North Adelaide in any capacity. He was out observing an amatuer league clubs training last night and just wondered if he was scouting players or looking for a place to play footy next year maybe???

Hey Im an unashamed fan of Daryl Wintle and admire the way he plays and gives all for the jumper.
I also agree that he's a great clubman and a good bloke off the field, so the only thing that Im disputing is the fact that I dont believe his playing record is at the level of being a "GREAT".
In my opinion each club has only a dozen or so that fit that criteria even to the point that I dont believe everyone who has made their respective clubs "Team of the Century" is necessary a club "great".
-I think the accolade is handed out too loosely.

Anyway, well done "TUBS" and good luck in the future.

Which club was it?

That might have some meaning.

he was out just doing a fun coaching thing with the under 11's.
