Is it a case of playing him because he is good enough, or perhaps Port putting players up as trade bait?

He's on the rookie list so can't be traded. Its more a case of the club evaluating players on their list.

I don't believe he can be upgraded and traded in the same year.

Someone may be able to confirm there.

Would be interesting in Nick Salter does get promoted to the Power list AND selected to make his AFL debut against The Saints at Telstra Dome. Don't think there would be too many blokes that have gone from SANFL reserves one week to AFL the week after, let alone just being upgraded off the rookie list the same week ??? Nick did kick 8 goals in the 2's from memory so I guess at least he is in good form and don't forget that he did play State footy earlier in the year.

Could also be a possibility that Matthew Westhoff could go from SANFL reserves to AFL in the week after with the yonger brother of Justin currently playing 2's for Centrals. I saw Power Assistant coach Jason Cripps at Unley Saturday morning and he was sitting next to me keeping a close eye on Matthew and was on the phone a couple of times, to Chocco I presume, praising his second efforts and 1%'ers which coaches love in a player. If Matty doesn't make his AFL debut this weekend, he should be strongly considered for the Doggies league team...

How was Matthew Westhoff's game in the Reserves on the weekend Big Phil? I heard he only kicked 1 goal, and only had a handful of touches. Is he a realistic chance of playing in CD's League side this week?

He certainly didn't have his best game but he did do a few good team things with string tackling, sheppards and assists. He actually spent a bit of time at CHB due to match ups but with the poor form of our forwards in the league side, he might get a gig in the league side based on that. Plus, I'm not sure whether or not the Power were sending Centrals a message by naming him as an emergency for them despite him only playing reserves, while Adam Cockshell, also a tall key position player, has been in ok form for the League side at Norwood ?

A rookie who is upgraded during the year to cover a long-term injury is only a temporary upgrade, and by 'default' reverts to being a rookie at the time the club is lodging its end-of-year lists and making a decision about their future.

Whether it is theoretically possible for a club to trade an 'upgraded rookie' depends on whether the first official list lodgment comes before or after trade week. I think it comes after, so no, it wouldn't be possible. An entirely theoretical argument as rookies have no trade value (if they've been elevated and played a string of genius games such that they do have value, then obviously the club is going to upgrade and keep them).

How many games does an AFL listed player have to play in the SANFL Reserves against the wishes of his AFL club before he can be automatically moved to another SANFL club (a la Willits)?

I don't think that there is a number of games that an afl listed player has to play in the reserves to be moved between clubs. There has been a number of changes where players have just been upset with the club they were at, such as Ian Perrie South to North.

As soon as the season is over he reverts back to a rookie. Rookie upgrades etc. happen after trade week so he cant be traded.

Another Eagle elevated from rookie onto AFL senior list

Just listening to Peter Rhode on the Cornsey and KG show and he has given the Power "squad" for this week. One of the INS was young Eagle star Nick Salter who Peter advised was elevated from the rookie list to the senior playing list today. Congratulations to Nick but quite amazing considering he was playing SANFL reserves last week, mind you kicking 8 goals.

Rhodey implied that the reason why he was elevated was due to the injury to Warren Tredrea and bascially gave the impression that he will make his AFL debut this week against St. Kilda. If it does eventuate, it would be amazing considering he would have played SANFL reserves one week, got promoted off the rookie list and then makes his AFL debut as little as 1 more week down the track. Interesting possibility and I asked the question last week with Matthew Westhoff playing reserves at Centrals and being named in the Power's squad.

They also named young Sturt allocated player Mitch Farmer and impressive Ryan Williams as possible debutant. Well done to all the young boys and congratulations and good luck if they do make their debuts.

I just relaised that the Nic(k) Salter thread was already posted and the info about his elevation posted there. Can one of the mods just link my new topic over to the original thread.

Cheers,

Big Phil...
