Former Dogs star needs a helping hand for sick daughter

Over on another thread earlier tonight, a few names of the past were brought up when talking of a few finals campaigns from the late 80's and mid 90's between Norwood and Centrals involving a few dust ups. One player in particular, Robert "Chopper" Handley was mentioned and after hearing of some sad news for Chopper, I though I would do whatever I can to help Robert and his family out in what will no doubt be a very tough time.

With the advise of a few people on other various topics, I thought I would start up this post to help out the former Bulldog champion with the sad news of his sick daughter. The ex Hawthorn star and one of my favourite all time Doggies players, has some terrible news in that, sadly, his young daughter Louisa has been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and they have to travel quite regularly back and forth from a Sydney hospital for her specialised treatment.

Obviously that would be a big financial strain on Robert and his family so the CDFC web site (and constable Handley's employer, the Holden Hill police station) have organised a movie night and set up an account for any donations to help raise funds and support the Handley family in this difficult time, made even more difficult, no doubt, with the tough financial burdens on most Aussie families already with interest rates, morgages, rising fuel costs and general strians on families these days, it must be tough.

Doggies supporters, and anyone for that matter, who want to help out should get on board and either head to the movie night to help raise funds or assist by making a donation of any size. I know I'll be making a donation next week as soon as I get paid again and am glad to help out a former Doggies champ in a trying time for Louisa and the Handley family.

As with the terrible news of Michael Parsons, it's sad when anyone in society is diagnosed with shocking illness and just as sad when we hear of it happening to local footy identities and their immediate families. I think it's important that if people can help out the Handley's, even as little as a $10 donation, it will alll add up and no doubt, be greatly appreciated.

Here's the link to the flyer and Centrals site with all the info: http://www.cdfc.com.au/2008/20080710_handley.htm

Thanks Guys,

Big Phil...

Most Bulldog supporters will remember Robert ‘Chopper’ Handley, who played 135 League games for the Club between 1988 and 1994 and kicked 176 goals, including 40 goals in 1992 when he was Club leading goal kicker.

Robert and his wife Julie have a 7 year old daughter (Louisa) who is currently fighting an aggressive form of leukemia. Louisa is currently in Sydney with Robert and Julie by her side while she undergoes a full bone marrow transplant, which will require her to stay in hospital for around 3 months to complete her treatment.

A Movie Night has been arranged by Robert’s work colleagues at the Holden Hill Police Station, with all proceeds of the event to assist Robert and Julie with the costs of travelling to and from the Sydney Children’s Hospital during Louisa’s treatment.

Click here to see the Flyer for all details on the Movie Night. To purchase your tickets, please call Graham Smith on 8207 6082.

A bank account has also been created for any donations to the family. Donations can be made to:

The Louisa Handley Benefit

Commonwealth Bank of Australia
BSB: 065 510
Account Number: 10122838

I just read this crappy news on the CDFC forum. If you want to help, do your best. Chopper is a top bloke & so is his missus, he has a bigger smile than Tim Weatherald! Please lend a hand if you can, thanks.

Lets be real. A gold coin is enough.

Lets get enough gold coins.

Do your bit.

Well done Sean, thanks mate, every little dollar will add up and will certainly ease the financial strain for the Handley's.

Sorry to hear about your mum, that's terrible news mate, we have a family friend who lost their battle to the horrible disease...

Thanks again, it's great to see there are some nice people out there and that the footballing community in general can be generous...

Wouldn't be the first time - your car would have auto pilot for your weekly bail sign in!

Seriously though I worked with Chopper for a few years and he is a top bloke and hopefully he will get heaps of financial help with this cause!

Hopefully 2 of his former team mates who are now coaching will dig deep otherwise I will have to pull out* some "snaps" from Choppers bucks night which could cause them some untold embarrassment! His bucks night was one of the most bizarre and funny nights I have ever been involved in!

Well, Mr. Drebin, for your information, yesterday was the first time ever that I have been to Holden Hill Police Station! (As for Angas Street lock-up, we won't go there!) :D

I will have a word to the secretary of our masonic lodge and see if we can do something, we support various charities from time to time, so no doubt this would be one that the members would be interested in!

Have a word to them about holding back the electric car while you are at it (bun for the reference).

But seriously, it is always sad to see this sort of stuff, and stories like Parsons' and Ante the goal umpire. Tragedy and misfortune is ever-present. By all means donate or support in anyway you can, however also spare a thought for those families doing it tough who do not have a profile from public life to call on.

Concur - not good stuff at all.

And the reference, The Simpsons. Stonecutter episode. I believe they are also responsible for making Steve Guttenberg a star.

I contribute finances directly to the Lieukemia Foundation and Ronald McDonald house charities, having also lost some family members and friends to the dreaded form of cancer.

I wish Chopper and his little girl the very best of luck with the illness. I have known people to fight this disease for in excess of 10 years or more, so I hope they are getting her the best treatment, and she is remaining as positive as she can...
