New rules on display at Legs/Bays game

Did anyone else find the new rules utterly frustrating and detrimental to the game last night? The rule in question is the 'touch a player after he's marked it / give away 25m'. Glenelg got two gift goals in the first quarter and then Gallagher sealed the game with a goal from a free where a Bays player brushed past him as he ran back to his mark.

On the whole, I thought the umpiring was pretty average last night.

agree - it was over umpired all night, Im used the SANFl umpires letting it go but looks like they have changed for this year...only going to make it soft

Centrals will struggle with this. For years they've been the master of hanging onto players after a mark or free kick.

A good rule change then.

oh so thats what it was, i thought they must of been for talking back to the ump or something

The not having to wait for the goal umpire to finish waving his flags rule is new as well isn't it?

Yeah I didn't pick it either. Umps were very trigger happy with the 25m penalties last night.

What was even more frustrating was they weren't consistant with the 25m either.

I thought one of the rules is to be more strict on delibrate out of bounds. There were a lot of obvious ones especially in the last term which were not paid.

A lot of holding the ball decisions were made. Which I think I liked, kept the ball moving.

Oh naughty, naughty Centrals. Maybe now they might have to win by resorting to using their SUPERIOR SKILLS.

the rules on display last night was to pay holding the ball at any opportunity even if the player going for the ball was the only player!!!!!!!!!

id love to see the free kick last night for the first 3 quarters!!!

very average umpiring its becoming to much like the afl game which we dont want the SANFL to be.

Agreed, the 25 metre rule simply gave some soft goals to both teams. That penalty to Glenelg was laughable, we all thought it was a gimme to the Bays. We didn't complain :) I think the application of the rule needs to be better monitored.

The kick-in after a behind rule is also a bit of a nuisance, but I guess it favours the kicking-in team, so ain't a problem.

The Holding-the-ball decisions were paid freely but not judged well in my opinion. One player ducked into a tackle and was awarded a free for too high; another player managed to slip out of grabs from 4 seperate blokes before going to ground - i.e. no tackles stuck - and still got pinged for holding. I like the umpires to be liberal with their HTB calls, but I like it better when they're correct and consistent.
