EAGLES’ MATTHEW BROADBENT WINS ROUND 13
COCA-COLA STAR SEARCH AWARD NOMINATION
Matthew Broadbent from the Woodville-West Torrens Football Club has been named the Round Thirteen Coca-Cola Star Search Award nominee.
At just 17 years of age, and playing his fourth League match, Broadbent was a key element to the Eagles’ outstanding 84 point win over the Bulldogs on Saturday at Woodville Oval.
Playing at centre half back, Broadbent matched up on experienced Central District player’s throughout the match and curbed their influence on the game whilst earning himself 17 possessions of his own. Broadbent’s ability to shut down key forwards has given the Eagles another dimension to their strong defence.
Making his League debut in Round 4 this year against Norwood, Broadbent has certainly proved his worth and moves towards cementing his position permanently in the League side. Broadbent is currently representing SA in the NAB Under 18 National Championship carnival.
Broadbent is still at high school and studying at St Michael’s College. He commenced his junior football at the Henley Sharks and represented his school with distinction before progressing to the Eagles’ senior ranks. Broadbent is the Eagles’ third Coca-Cola Star Search nominee for season 2008, along with Travis Lane and Jared Petrenko.
Introduced last season, the Coca-Cola Star Search Award recognises the talented youngsters making their mark in League ranks.

Well done to young Broady...
Was impressive on the weekend for the Eags and I've seen him in a couple of State Under 18's games !!
Is he a Top 10 draft pick chance ??? Has good agility for his size, clean skills and shows poise. Maybe needs to bulk up but that will come...
Well done again Matthew...
Big Phil...

I love seeing these young kids coming through, particularly those that are being taught to play well defensively and with good discipline.
Top 10? Perhaps not, but I'd expect him to be strongly looked at by many AFL clubs...

Ever wonder why we (the SANFL as a whole) have so many recruits from interstate? It's because we need to replace those that get drafted.

The only reason I asked whether he would be a top 10 pick or not was because that was suggested by the DB or Paul I think in the 5RPH call from the weekend's call of the Eags v Dogs game at Woodville where he impressed enough to get this nomination...

Been super impressive every time I've seen him this year, whether it be at senior level or in the Under 18 Championships. Moves very smoothly and looks to have a real future.

Matty Broadbent would have to be a first round or early second round pick. He is 16 months younger than Jarrahan Jacky who went number 30 (round 2) in last years draft and at this stage is a lot better footballer than Jacky.

Ferret, yes good observations from you again. Broadbent has improved nearly every game he has played and seems to have developed a lot more poise. He will have to get picked up at around pick 20 at the highest. I believe that he had some superb coaching and guidance whilst at primary school which set him on the correct course.

Not a real strong arguement there SC. How many draftees have we had in last few years?? Not many i would have thought!
Congrats Matt

Ok, I did exaggerate a little, but I'm sure we will need to find another interstate recruit to replace him.

He is a very talented footballer (and cricketer). He is very disciplined and reminds me a lot of Mark McKenzie - perhaps a little more pace and more penetration in his kick, which should see him become a very good AFL footballer. Like McKenzie, his one touch in any conditions is a skill not a lot of footballers have.

Broadbent = class act. I hope to heaven the Crows or PAP pick him up so we can still get a few more games out of him. His mentors from an early age have done a superb job as he is very level headed, not at all conceited, mature and has talent to burn.
His father was a very talented football representing the state in amateur league I think. Mum also played netball at a high level so the genetics are there.

Different draft years have different depths. Last year lacked depth. This year is meant to be a lot stronger and deeper.
Wouldnt surprise if the Crows picked him up with their first pick and somewhere around 16-30 seems the spot he'll go. He'll be one of the first SA boys taken along with Hartlett and maybe Johnston.

If Matty Wright isn't the first SA boy picked this year something is wrong, IMO.
His only other competition for Rookie of the year is Tom Holmes from Glenelg.

If Wright gets picked up it will be 3rd round onwards in my opinion. Id be very shocked if he went before Hartlett and Broadbent.
