Peter Walsh retires

Media release from Westies announcing Peter Walsh's retirement.

Sal Hassan is to have a knee reconstruction.

MEDIA RELEASE

1 July 2008

The West Adelaide Football Club regretfully announces the retirement of Peter Walsh. Peter informed the playing group and coaching staff of his decision before training last night.

During the Port Adelaide game (Round 12), Peter strained his hamstring for the 5th time over the past 1½ seasons which resulted in this decision. Peter returned to the Club in 2007 with a wealth of experience after almost a decade in the AFL. Whilst his input in coaching and on field experience has been invaluable, unfortunately his body has not allowed him to play to the standard of football all supporters know he is capable of.

Peter will continue in his role as an Assistant Coach at the Club until the end of the season at which time he will assess his coaching opportunities.

Peter Walsh said “the time has come to allow our young up and coming players every opportunity and I’m looking forward to focusing my energy on supporting these young players.”

Damien Phillips (CEO) said “Whilst Peter’s return to the Club as a player has not been as hoped for from both the Club and Peter’s perspectives, we have valued his experience from nearly 150 games of AFL football, that he has and will continue to impart upon our large number of developing young talent. Therefore we are delighted that Peter will continue to remain with the Club in his assistant coaching role.”

In further news, Sal Hassan will undergo a full knee reconstruction next Tuesday. The Club wishes him all the best in his recovery process.

It has been very sad that we have not been able to see what Whopper can do for the WAFC but i wish him well in retirement. It is also unfortunate that Sal requires a full reco hope he makes a quick recovery.

Westies do seem to be having a run of bad luck at present, Good luck to Peter anyway. Sal Hassan played with some pretty good form when he previously played for West in the SANFL, lets hope that post the reconstruction that he can get back there as he is a very valuable player for West when he is firing at full capacity!

Amazingly long career. Played his first league game for North Adelaide in 1976.

About 140 AFL games, as well as his SANFL matches.

Back to Football 101, ML, although it's probably wasted on you.

I had no idea who he was either, but then I don't get to see SANFL games over here in Victoria, and don't follow any of the teams he played for at either level.

Agreed & I am suprised he lasted so long, having to work with the mobile phone thrower. Imagine the hazard of phones Ricocheting around the commentary box whilst watching the brother's choked up coaching.
