Hey Footy Fans,

In light of what I just read over on the Centrals forum (and Dutchy beating me to my post about Thommo) news has come through that Centrals co-captain being suspended once again for season 2008 after an incident with Glenelg's John Hinge from the weekend's game. Thomas has been banned for 2 weeks in another decision that highlights the shocking inconsistancy and incompetent nature of the SANFL tribunal system. I just finished watching the replay on tape earlier tonight and saw the incident replayed a few times. While it was clear, that yes, paul made slight contact to John Hinge's head, the contac was very minimal did not deserve 2 weeks.

In my opinion, the SANFL tribunal has never been consistant and the way it operates is beyond farcical. This year has been the worse interms of both decisions made and lack of decisions made and honestly think that they system needs a complete iverhaul. Now, yes I'm saying this after one of my clubs players has been suspended but I can guarentee you that it is by no means sour grapes on my part, I have felt this way and expressed my opinions after previous tribunal incidents from other club's players.

All in all I think it's an absolute joke that the SANFL run the system the way they do and although i hate to admit, I think that they maybe need to have a similar format to that of the AFL with a points system. Obviously something needs to be done because the current format is just not working and is an absolute joke... I might put up a poll on the opinions of others, would be interesting to see what supporters of other clubs thing of the current SANFL Tribunal System...

Consistency is one thing they have never had.
I remember Bonadido got reported for striking 3 or 4 games in a row and deservedly so and never got a game and then you see what some people do and get suspended which is very frustrating, especially when it happens to players of Thomas' quality, they are the kinds of players we go to see.

I don't think Centrals can complain, the amount of leniency the Gowans brothers have recieved over the years.

I wondered how long it would take before someone uneducated came along and mentioned how leniantly Centrals, and the Gowans twins, are "supposedly" dealt with by the SANFL tribunal. Can all future posters on this particular topic please read my original post where I said that I'm not posting this because I have sour grapes because it was a Centrals player suspended this week. It didn't take long did it, just 3 posts.

If you actually pay attention to what i said, the whole jist of what I'm trying to say is more on the shocking inconsistancies of the tribunal system itself. Courtney Fish, you are wrong on both counts in point in that ALL clubs have complained at some stage about the running of the SANFL tribunal system and the severe inconsistancies in there rulings and punishments (sometimes as well as lack of punishment) handed out. The other point has been proved wrong, on this very forum by Smac I believe, that both Gowans twins have HARDLY ever been reported let alone suspended. Yes, James' indiscretion in last year's GF is an exception to that but he was punished appropriately given the evidence of provocation on James' part after Shubert was found to be the instigator.

Get over having a whinge about Centrals and the Gowans boys and join in with me having a whinge about the inadequate SANFL tribunal system.

Sporn's bull5hit suspension at the begining of last season still makes North supporters see red...

What I'm still trying to come to grips with is how an 18 year old kid who is a ball player, running towards the flight of the ball, who tangles with an opposition player who is also trying to make the play, have a clash. Both players go down, one of the two is reported and gets a game. The umpire should have gotten a game for putting the player on report in the first instance. Perhaps we should be looking to what happens before the situations eventuate.

The last thing we need in our system is anything resembling the points system of the AFL

What we need is the Umpire and the player involved, both tell their side of the incident, the tribunial then makes a decesion.

No Lawyers, no Advocates, no one to twist and turn the evidence supplied

Seeing the incident live it didn't look that bad and possibly only deserved a game but as you wrote yourself he has been suspended again so maybe got two weeks as he dosen't have a great record.

For me in the past the SANFL Tribunal has been reprimand city then plucks one out every know and then that they deal with harshly.

Being found guilty twice in a season would not help the penalty so that possibly tied the tribunals hands a little bit to having to hand out a heavier punishment.

Who knows though but I believe it is works better than the ridiculous AFL system.

We can't follow the AFL model because we don't have the resources.

If the SANFL follows suit of the AFL's tribunal system we're in alot of trouble, we have all seen the inconsistent disaster the AFL have & still are displaying, i hope our tribunal never goes down that road.
Our tribunal system is healthy & consistent with no need for changes thats why our game here in SA is more enjoyable than some of that AFL crap which has been destroyed by wankers like Demitriou who consistently LOVE changing the rules that not only confuse us but there own umpires.

In the main I agree with NM ... Whilst our system isn't perfect, I'd much prefer what we have to that of the AFL.

I much prefer the AFLs. With details (and understanding) of their guidelines its quite easy to predict suspensions, etc. They do however have the advantage of more cameras at games but Ive predicted most outcomes with the AFL tribunal with accuracy.
With the SANFL tribunal you have no idea and might as well as pull a ball out of a barrell, a complete joke. You cant predict anything except for the fact itll be 3 games or less. Blokes get 2 weeks for hip and shoulders and 3 weeks for king hits. A complete farce IMHO.

Goodes 1 game vs Bassett who gets off. I dunno if that's "more" predictable!

I've not seen any incidents at the SANFL games recently, so I can't comment on whether it's "working" but I'd suspect it's the same old problems.

Does anyone know if they look at previous incidents and then work out a suitable punishment/penalty, or is it all on heresay and the individual incident in isolation? (as well as taking into account the players' good record etc).

You used to have to commit murder to get a week in the SANFL. I quite enjoyed those times.

OK to me..

One thing Ive learnt about footy over the years....you will always get poor decisions by Umpires and Tribunals...we di 20 years ago and still do today and will in 10 years time...cant control it so dont let it bother you, sure have a spit for 10 second after any "injustice" but move on....trust me you will enjoy your footy much more

First of all, I watched the replay of the game last night and while it may have been more than "slight" contact as I put it, at no stage did any of the ABC commentators say it was malicious or deliberate (as in to make contact with John's head) so while yes, I might not have picked the best choice of words, in terms of what we have seen (and in some incidents this year, seen worse get off or get less of a suspension) so far this year, I was insinuating, as many other posters were, that I thought the 2 weeks suspension was maybe 1 game too much.

That point then led me to the main gist of the topic mate, if you read it properly. I have no problem with him getting suspended, even though it's more disappointing as he is a personal mate, and to my second point, if you have any effing idea, here is my second paragraph for you to look at:

So did you actually read it thoroughly before going off at me all half cocked tigerboss. What part do you not understand about it. I said that the umpiring standard has been average ALL year and for a few years now, I acknowledged that yes, I made this post after one of my club's players was suspended BUT reiterated the point that it wasn't sour grapes and that I had made similar opinions in other individual threads from previous topics mentioned prior tribunal results. Get over yourself mate, what more do you want me to do to make you happy, shine ya shoes 'guvner ??
This incident simply brought to fruition my thoughts on the below par performance of the current tribunal system hence the reason i started up this topic. To get the opinion of other supporters (who unlike you have expressed their thoughts and cast their vote, not nit pick at the topics credibility and that of the creator) on a current football topic. Correct me if I'm wrong mate, but isn't that what this public forum is all about ? It's somewhere where people can express an opinion and anticipate discussion, both good and bad, about the TOPIC they posted. Get it !!??

Finally, I think YOU are the one who looks stupid mate because YOU are coming across as really pathetic mate, seriously. For FFS, yes I am an extremely passionate Doggies supporter and bleed red, white and blue blood BUT unlike some, I can express my opinion on all things football, other than just Centrals without going completely over the top. Get off your friggin high horse mate and get on with posting about Glenelg and their success so far this year. And BTW, if you read into EVERY post the way you seem to with mine, you notice that there are plenty of users out there who, like us all, are entitled to an opinion and post on current footy issues like the umpiring and tribunal system.

Yeah the Gowans' boys are antagonistic pricks at the best of times and while the only good thing you have said in your post was that you love watching them and how they go about it, you got it wrong AGAIN with saying they have been lucky to get away with what they have. First of all, they know how to push limits to the nth degree without stepping over the line (barring a couple of exceptions that were simply dealt with accordingly) but it is no different to any other club every year. They'll have a couple of players who are aggressive and arrogant pushing the limits of the law, BUT they too "get away with things" as you seemed to put it. Oh, and before I go, I'll kick your crappy little dig at the end there right to the gutter, where it belongs, and say that the Centrals BBQ is up there with the BEST at all the SANFL grounds (fighting for top spot with the Westies one IMO)...
