Jarman Floods!!!

Sorry for making this a different topic to the North v South topic but I thought it would be of particular interest to a lot of people. I like how the North coach almost lays the blame for it not at clutching straws but at Sturt, Central and Glenelg's feet. :?

It was noticable today as you can tell from this photo that Jars is obviously making a late clutch at his job by doing something he's abused for 5 or more years, as captured in this photo:

This is Zac Milbank's article from tomorrow's Sunday Mail which addresses the issue:

North flood to a win
ZAC MILBANK | June 21, 2008 05:26pm

NORTH Adelaide coach Andrew Jarman has sinned. The man known known for producing an attacking Roosters outfit, brimming with skill and flair, resorted to flooding today as his men earned an unflattering - yet effective - 47-point win against South Adelaide at Prospect.

''It's (flooding) against my religion,'' Jarman admitted after the game.

''But it's an area we'll need to keep looking at. I still like to make sure we're attacking and kicking our goals but these days it's a fine line. Central has been doing it for eight years, Sturt has nailed it and Glenelg has been doing it very well. It's funny how the game is shifting.''

In a sight not seen at Menzies Crescent in Jarman's five-year reign, North regularly had every player - except forward Heath Younie - in its defensive half when the visitors were on the attack.

Not only did it clog the stagnant Panthers' attempts to deliver cleanly to marking targets Ben Warren and Dale Ellis, but it allowed North to attack on the counter punch.

As soon as the hosts turned the ball over, a nest of Roosters - notably Daniel Ward, Nathan Lonie, Damon White and Trent Sporn - queued up across half-back to send the ball forward.

''That's (half-back) where you generate your gameplan,'' Jarman noted.

''That's where all the good sides start and if they're (defensive runners) flat and not running then we're in trouble.''

As soon as the legion of red-and-white linkmen streamed forward, Fos Williams Medallist Clint Alleway gleefully accepted their immaculate disposals to nail a game-high 5.1 to go with his 10 marks.

''He's a class player isn't he? And if you tell him that he will agree,'' Jarman said of his valuable bigman.

''He's super competitive and has been playing a little bit sore since the state game.''

South, chasing its first win against North in its past eight starts, suffered from hesitant decision-making entering its attacking 50m arc. After hanging tough in the first half - South only trailed by 24 points at the main break - the Panthers conceded six goals in the all-important third term as Dale Ellis managed their only goal for the quarter.

''They (North) worked pretty hard back,'' South coach Clay Sampson said.

''It was their work-rate and we probably didn't move the ball quick enough through the midfield into our forward line. And that's what it's all about - quick ball movement - and we didn't do that.''

Crows-listed pair Andy Otten (37 disposals) and David Mackay (29) worked hard for the Panthers after being omitted from AFL duty during the week while Michael Handby was tireless in trying to set up play through the middle of the ground.

GAME STATS:

North 4.2 7.6 13.8 15.11 (101)

South 2.0 4.2 5.3 8.6 (54)

BEST - North: Alleway, Allan, Lonie, Ward, Archard, D. White, Cunningham, Wright. South: Otten, Handby, Rolfe, Mackay, Redigolo.

SCORERS - North: Alleway 5.1, Wright 2.1, O'Brien 2.0, W. Thompson, Delvins 1.2, Stewart 1.1, Lonie. B. White, Archard 1.0, Younie 0.2, D. White, Ward 0.1. South: Otten, Rolfe 2.0, Warren 1.3, Redigolo, Ellis, Boyd 1.0, Smith, Thewlis 0.1, rushed 0.1.

INJURIES - North: Allan (Achilles). South: Neagle (hamstring) withdrew from selected squad.

UMPIRES - D. Joyce, S. Thompson, R. Williams.

A bit hypocritical perhaps the way he's canned clubs for doing this in the past or just a person clutching at straws knowing his job is all but gone?

The wheel is turning - once prided on attacking footy, SANFL is going backwards, while the AFL going forwards, although in it's keepings off way.

Good observation, I personally think Geelong turned the AFL around single handedly last year whilst at the same time with the success Central have had in the SANFL with nullifying footy the SANFL is turning back the other way.
The days of trying to attract people to SANFL because its more attacking than the SANFL is well and truly over.

Wedgie, you'd know more than most but I understand that only a flag will save him. I hear he has ostracized G Elliott from anything to do with on-field footy matters and given rightly or wrongly Elliott's the golden boy of the board given their financial stability he doesn't have many friends left

Geelong are still one of the strongest defensive teams going around, on top of their brilliant attacking rebound. If you look carefully there's plenty of room in their forward line most of the time, 3 guesses where everyone else is.

I also think the all-out-attack SANFL has been a bit of an urban legend anyway. It was more that some of the AFL teams had gone so ultra-defensive in 2005-2006 era that even lawn bowls looked more attacking, at times. But Centrals have been grinding it out for years, as others have said.

So, it sounds like it's about time Jars came around. It's a pity the penny dropped after round 12 ..... only small consolation is at least it isn't round 22 ..... after last year's GF would have been best!

That's outrageous. Hanging is too good for him.
Anyone would think after 4 consectutive finals appearances and 100+ games of an attacking game plan cutting someone a little slack maybe the order of the day.

As per my comment on the Roost, that is far from the issue here my friend.
But I'll excuse you as you live interstate and haven't had to put up with Jarman's rants and raves over the last 5 years about the only way to play footy is through being attacking and that people who do anything but that should be kicked out of the game.

(I think you get the drift of my point now. )

I don't think anyone has issues about clubs/coaches that promote defensive/boring footy (Central have done it beautifully the 10 years!), but a lot of people do have issues with hypocrites.

PS Go Cats! Attacking Footy rocks! :D

It's just the angle of the camera. It's an optical illusion.

Looks like Wakelin and the other bloke at the head of the square are saying "don't kick it to me I need a rest" and if the bloke right out the back leads in the direction he's got his hand he'll be knocking the thermoses over on the terrace.

Not an illusion at all, there were times today when there was noone forward of centre in Norths attacking 1/2.

Flooding in nothing new in the SANFL, has happened for years.

I don't doubt that, but after dropping down to about 85 points per game per team in 2004, it increased up to 104 points in 2006, and has gone backwards since. That's what I was pointing out.

Might be a season or 2 too late, but finally Jars is making a change!

I don't care about seeing attacking footy, I want to see North win.

Flooding is also nothing new at North, has been happening for years.

PS. Obviously there are different versions of flooding - I call it when you have 2 or more extra defenders than the opposition has attackers...

Its funny how it has changed at Club Level .Because I told my brother in law at the state game "its like watching a sturt side from years ago".To me they were playing the run on and handball game which helped run over the top of the Vics.

Looks like South should have asked for a head count...?

Flooding is a tactic of todays footy.

If it helps to win you enough games to play Finals Footy, then is it wrong..? :-k :-k
