Three field umpires...

Postby pipers » Thu Jun 12, 2008 11:09 am

... walk into a bar...

But seriously, I have a problem with the three-umpire system.

In my opinion, three umpires means the rules get interpreted in a different way by each umpire, and more interpretations get made than is strictly neccessary because there are more people to make them.

By extension it also means that more of them will be wrong.

I 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th that Blue Boy...

Although Centrals have been LUCKY enough to have not had Colin attempt to officate one of our games for a while now, one young umpire who is trying very hard to take over Mr Rowston's mantle as one of the most hated umps in the SANFL, is Toby Medlin...

He was shocking last Saturday in the Central v South game out at Elizabeth, but it wasn't really the calls that he did make getting Doggies supporters (and the minimal South fans who trecked down from Noarlunga) frustrated, it was more the blatantly obvious frees he DIDN'T pay that were really annoying for both fans and players alike...

I'm starting to agree more with some people on here who say Richard Williams is one of the better white maggots running around in our great comp and I think Tim Pfieffer isn't as bad as he used to be anymore. If I could have my choice of 3 umpies for selected Doggies games, it would be something like R.Williams, T.Pfieffer and S.Grun...

GO U DOGGIES...

BOO THE WHITE MAGGOTS...

From the game at Woodville on Saturday, there was one umpire (dark hair, dont know who he is) that seemed to be afraid to get too close to the play. He was calling decisions from 30m+ away.

I personally have an issue with where they position themselves.
A couple of years ago they trialled giving the boundary umps some powere in a North v West trial and it was the best umpiring exhibition Ive seen in 20 years.
IMHO Id like 2 field umpires with perhaps 2 or 4 boundary umps having similar powers to linesmen in soccer. (ie only calling obvious frees the central umps miss)

How about no umpires? The players could argue amongst themselve what happened, settle it with rock paper scissors and punch on if that doesnt work.

Would make more sense that some of the umpiring decisions.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Id really like to see one day a blatant free kick givin the wrong way and the team that was awarded the free kick give it to the opposition as it should have been theres in the first place.

unfortunately it will never happen but it would show how incompetent and screwed up the umps are

If that was to be the case, I reckon Chris and James Gowans would make brilliant umpires !!??

The other side would NEVER get a free kick paid in their favour !!?? :D 8)
