I think I know the incident you're talking about. The North player had just dumped the Sturt player after he was already over the boundary line. Another Sturt player came in to remonstrate. There didn't seem to be anything nasty/racial in it. The Sturt player is not the type that would ever stoop to that level. The North player certainly did not look as though anything offensive was said to him.

North's W.Thompson "allegedly" racially vilified by Sturt pl

Postby Big Phil » Wed Jun 11, 2008 7:32 pm

I know something was briefly mentioned in an earlier post somewhere else about this, without going into too much detail BUT...

In the sport section tonight on Channel 10 news, they reported that the North Adelaide Football Club have lodged an official complaint with the SANFL that in Monday's game against Sturt at Unley Oval, young Aboriginal speedster, Wade Thompson was racially vilified by an unnamed Sturt player. They went on to say that the SANFL have a mediation process in place for racial vilification offences and that it will be applied to this particular accusation, but if all parties involved can not come to a suitable resolution, there will be further investigation into the matter and the appropriate action will be taken from there...

Anyone have any idea who the Sturt player was. On the other posts that mentioned this as a "possible" incident, someone said they think they were aware when the incident took place so they would know who the possible offender was. Seeing as though North have come out and said Wade Thompson was the player who was vilified, should it therefore be known as to who the "offender" was from the Double Blues ? I think their name should made public, so that they can feel some form of humiliation, like they have put Wade through.

Interestingly, the report also went on to say that this was not the first time the SANFL has dealt with a racial vilification incident in season 2008. Does anyone know of any other incident(s) that were possibly kept out of the media ??? Will be interested to see if there is any further media coverage of this incident, especially if it is to go to a mediation stage ??? Whoever the offender is, if the accusations are true, should be really ashamed of themselves, it is a terrible act and lack of respect for humanity and equality and hope they are punished accordingly.

In any case it is dissappointing that (1) these things happen in this day and age and (2) why they can't be resolved without media highlighting it as the two clubs, players etc haven't even met yet hence the Sturt player being unnamed but we will find out shortly no doubt.

An interesting outcome re this matter is that if it is found to be the case that Thompson was racially vilified by a Sturt player how is he going to front his own indigenous teammates in Sharples, Cubillo and Pearce (when he plays for Sturt)?

I was just thinking the same thing myself Wedgie. I can see no reason to name or shame anyone when no charge has been proven at this stage. I'm not sure why it would even be made public at this point in time.

Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to add the word "allegedly" into the title of this thread, at least for the time being.

Did you vehemently condemn the CDFC player who racially vilified Sudjai Cook a few years back? He's still playing, so there's still a chance you can name and shame him. :D

although wrong & in todays society totally unnacceptable, but it could be just a heat in the moment comment that the sturt player is regretting he said

so lets just see what happens as we have all said things we've regretted in the past & he probably is as well

I agree that any racially motivated incident is to be condemed but I don't think 'name and shame' is always the best move. Has the potential to create far more trouble off the field as there's often people looking for an excuse to kick-off and make trouble between different ethnic groups and they are only too happy to jump on the back of what should be a relatively minor incident that has yet to be proven. Not saying that's the case with anyone on here but I think that if things can be settled to the satisfaction of those directly involved then it should be left at that.

Spot on - we have all said things in the heat of battle and in anger and immediately regretted it. I think the best outcome is behind closed doors, the matter is resolved before the SANFL gets involved formally.

P.S. Mind you if they refer it to the tribunal who knows what could happen.

Oh drebin, please dont bring up the tribunal again...not this week..it has been appalling. Give them some time to gather their senses, if possible.

Exactly.

Some years ago - in the same match that Bryan "squealer" Bienke got his club to stand over a senior umpire to get him off a striking charge, not that it's relevant - a Port player claimed to have been subject to racial sledges by a Glenelg player. The matter was sorted through mediation where it was determined to have been a misunderstanding. If names had been named beforehand, that Glenelg player would have had his reputation dragged through the gutter for no good reason. Mud sticks.

For this reason names should be suppressed until guilt is proven. Once it is proven, then by all means haul the @rsehole over the coals, but until then he should be left alone.
